Three years ago I had an implant of cadaveric rib cartilage placed on right side of septum to increase air resistance. I can feel the added volume when I touch it. The procedure involved a right hemitransfixion incision, detachment of the perichondrium and insertion of a cartilage plate at the anterior portion of the septum. I would like to know: 1. Would removing the implant be difficult? 2. If the implant is removed, will my nose return to its pre-implant state or tissues would be damaged?
Answer: This is a difficult question to answer. In general, we do not put cartilage crafts to increase the resistance of airflow. We do use them to decrease the resistance of airflow, so somebody can breathe better. If this cartilage graft was placed, and if it is leading to a pleasing cosmetic appearance, removal of the graft may lead to a change in your nasal appearance. In that regard, please consider reconsulting with your surgeon, or another reputable rhinoplasty specialist. I hope this helps, and thank you for your question! Sincerely, Dr Joseph

Answer: Removing rib graft? Thanks Maici for your question! Revision Rhinoplasty is an exacting operation. Even half a millimeter can make a big difference. The size and location of the implant, the type of surgery performed, and the extent of tissue integration during the previous three years all affect how difficult it is to remove the implant. In most cases, skilled surgeons can remove these implants with little trouble. However, only a skilled surgeon can evaluate the precise process and any difficulties through a physical examination. The nasal tissues could revert to their pre-implant form if the implant is gently removed. It's crucial to remember, though, that the outcome may change depending on how the body reacts to the implant and the surgery. The nasal structure may occasionally exhibit mild changes, such as slight scarring or modifications to the cartilage and surrounding tissues. A skilled surgeon can do a thorough assessment, go over the advantages and disadvantages of removal, and provide tailored guidance based on your particular circumstances. Implant removal has some hazards, such bleeding, infection, and scars, much like any other surgical operation. Your surgeon can provide you with a thorough explanation of these risks and assist you in making an educated choice. Depending on personal circumstances, the healing phase following implant removal may differ. To reduce problems and encourage the best possible recovery, it's critical to carefully follow your surgeon's post-operative recommendations. By consulting with a qualified healthcare professional, you can obtain accurate information and make informed decisions about your treatment options.
