Weight loss is the recommended, healthier, less expensive and more natural way to get the results you want. To make an assessment for men’s abdomens we need to differentiate between three variables. These are subcutaneous fat(the pinchable fat between the skin and muscle layer that we remove with Liposuction(, potential skin laxity and excess intra-abdominal or visceral fat. Men tend to have a higher percentage of visceral fat than women but it varies from person to person. Man with a high percentage of visceral fat will see limited results from the bus action and will still have a bulging abdomen despite having the procedure. Based on your pictures it looks like you’re kind of half and half so you should have a pretty good result from liposuction. The other thing to consider is that while you feel like your abdomen is your problem area your fat distribution is normal and fairly equally thick on all of your torso. If you only treat your abdomen then you’ll be left with an abnormal fat distribution that can look abnormal. For that reason I usually try to treat the entire torso as a single anatomic unit to leave people with an even natural than the fact distribution. A full torso includes upper abdomen, lower abdomen, love handles, waist, fall back, chest and under arm area. In men it’s especially important to treat up into the armpits to allow definition along the latissimus dorsi muscle and pectoralis muscles to be well defined. They are yeah I’m referring to is over the serratus anterior muscle. Weight loss has more to do with eating habits then exercise so maybe you can adjust your diet and cut out some of the calories or carbs or whatever it is that’s keeping you from being lean. You’ve done it before and you can probably do it again but it gets harder as we get older. Weight loss will give you a more natural and better result and it will take care of the visceral fat as well. If you do opt for Liposuction I suggest vetting plastic surgeons carefully by having multiple in person consultations and make sure you find the most experience provider in your community. Delivering consistent high-quality Liposuction results is more difficult than people and some providers believe. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
