I have tons of spitting stitches. Can I use silicone tape over them? (Photo)

Just had 2nd bl revision he left the blue stitches In 3 wks said I would split if he removed them sooner. At the same time i waS spitting tons of stitches.still there. They have scabbed over it appears..ihe said just leave them todissolve on those own at the 3 wk visit and not to come backuntil.6 wks I dnt knw what to do iff they are going to affect healing ? Not remove? Water made red and so i dnt shwer I just also got silicone tape but don't know if I should use them over spitting stitches?

Spitting stitches are dissolvable sutures which are meant to stay within the breast tissue and not become exposed.  Unfortunately, dissolvable sutures sometimes come to the skin surface at which time they are referred to as "spitting stitches".  These spitting stitches create a break in the epithelium which allows bacteria to enter.  This bacteria helps dissolve the spitting stitches, but unfortunately if you cover it with tape of any kind, the bacteria will multiply logrithmetically, leading to an abscess which can cause scarring and, at times, true infection.Therefore, the short answer to your question is don't put tape of any kind over spitting stitches.  At this point, I highly recommend you see your plastic surgeon sooner rather than later as these sutures are best removed to get less scarring.

Hello,These are 'micro infections' that will slow healing, and ultimately make for less than desirable scaring. You should go back to your surgeon and gently urge him to remove any stitch that is penetrating the skin. If he doesn't, you need to go to someone else. Best of luck!

Hello realsm. Thanks for your questions and photos. Spitting sutures can be problematic and sometimes can lead to additional complications like poor scarring and infection. You should probably address this issue with your PS this week and they can give you instructions on what to do or have you come to the office for removal of the spitting sutures. Best, Dr. ALDO
