Should I stop or cut back on caffeine before facelift surgery?

Your surgeon will most likely tell you what you need to stop taking before your surgery at your pre-operative appointment, the list may be very extensive. I have a two page list that I give my patients. You should take a list of all medications and supplements that you are now taking to your pre-op appointment for  your surgeon to review. You will also learn that you are to stop everything even water after midnight the day of your surgery. Good luck.

I don't know of any reason why you would need to cut back or stop caffeine in anticipation of your surgery. If you are a regular coffee drinker, it is important to also continue it after surgery or can you get a headache from the abrupt caffeine withdrawal. Brow lift patients can sometimes experience tension-like headache symptoms from the tightness along the forehead, and one of the main medications we prescribe for tension headaches, called Fioricet, actually has caffeine in it and that helps for a tension headache.

Thanks for your question. I am not too particular about the routine use of caffeine in my facelift patients. I would just stick with your routine. Discontinuing it can lead to rebound headaches, then you will be miserable during recovery, possibly needing more pain medication, etc. I'd go ahead and call your surgeon about it though. Believe me, it's not a bother... we want to know!

Caffeine normally is not a contraindications to surgery.  If you drink a lot of caffeine and suddenly stop you may have a bad headache.  A lot of caffeine can trigger hypertension.

Thank  you for your question.  I would ask your surgeon directly what their pre-op preference is for caffeine intake prior to surgery.  In my practice, I do not require patients to stop caffeine prior to surgery.  

Thank you for your question. I do facelift under sedation and ask my patients NOT to eat or drink the day of surgery. Some people are quite sensitive to caffeine and will increase blood pressure moderately. This may potentially increase the risk of hematoma. Ask your surgeon about his/her instruction. 

 in our practice,  drinking caffeine prior to the surgery is a nonissue.  It is important not to have any coffee the morning of the surgery.  Always best to check with your operative surgeon.
