Is Sculptra ok for someone with Eczema?

Question

Would eczema be a problem for me getting Sculptra?I was searching on the web and found that eczema is considered an autoimmune disease. Would this cause nodules down the road? I’ve had voluma in the past and always go when my face is clear from the eczema and never have had a problem. What would your recommendation be? Thanks for the input.

Sculptra is historically used in HIV/AIDS patient population to treat some fat atrophy issues with great results, but there are some concerns in general if patient has systemic diseases and as such it is best to have a thorough examination by a medical doctor beforehand.

I suggest meeting with a cosmetic dermatologist for a formal evaluation. Sculptra is used with caution in patients with autoimmune diseases; I don’t recommend it in patients who have a connective tissue disease or are on immunosuppressant medications. Discuss your condition and any medications you’re taking with your doctor who will assess whether or not Sculptra is right for you.

Eczema is a general term that means "dermatitis," which is inflammation of the skin, although the term is often used as a synonym for "atopic dermatitis."  If you truly have atopic dermatitis, it is a condition related to compromised skin barrier.  There are immune system irregularities associated with this condition, but it is not truly an autoimmune condition in the sense of antibodies attacking the body.  If you have been diagnosed with the atopic dermatitis form of eczema, then Sculptra and other fillers would be a safe treatment.  Preferably, you would want to wait until your eczema is under control and not flared up before getting these treatments, because if your skin barrier is severely compromised, you will be at higher risk for getting infections.  Otherwise, you would not be at higher risk for developing nodules with Sculptra.  I recommend discussing your concerns directly with your provider.
