What is the failure rate of Platysmaplasty with Dissolvable Internal Sutures?

Platysmaplasty is surgical rejuvenation technique of the neck that is long lasting. It is usually performed with dissolvable sutures that hold the new reshaped platysma muscle until it heals in 3 months. Dissolvable sutures usually last for 3 to 6 months.Patients that have undergone platysmaplasty should adhere to their surgeons post-surgical recommendations and activity restrictions. Any activity that could break up the stitches before the healing process  (of the platysma muscle) happens could affect the longevity thus ruining the platysmaplasty. 

Although it doesn't happen often and would depend upon your anatomy,  I have seen platysmaplasty failure after use of dissolvable sutures.  For this reason, I usually use a combination of permanent and dissolvable sutures.

I have used dissolving sutures (PDS long acting) for this problem in our practice for over 10 years with excellent results.  The sutures have to stay for 2-3 months, if they dissolve sooner, then the lift may sag.

A reasonable question, but you shouldn't worry. This procedure is most often done with various types of absorbable sutures and the results hold up very well in experienced hands. The problem with permanent sutures is on occasion someone might feel the knots or the suture over time, especially with a slimmer neck.

Many surgeons do use long acting dissolving sutures for anterior platysmaplasty and they can work reasonably well provided the original inner edges of the platysma were not too far apart and division of the muscle with adequate separation of the ends of the divided muscle low in the neck is performed as well. Despite all this there can be failures with the re-appearance of anterior platysma bands within a few years.For this reason I use some permanent sutures as well as dissolving ones to hold things in the long term

You might have to ask the plastic and cosmetic surgeon that perormed your Neck Lift to be certain that dissolvable sutures alone were used.  I use a cobination of long acting dissolvables sutures over which I run a double layer or permanent sutures in the muscle layer.  Hope this helps.
