I am four months post-op and had an abnormal mammogram recently- Had to go through additional mammogram(s) and ultrasounds to rule out malignancy- The radiologist told me that he was confident the mass was a breast fat necrosis likely caused by the mastopexy- Is this a common phenomena? Do I need to make my plastic surgeon aware of the necrosis? Will the necrosis resolve on its own or does it need to be excised? Do necroses turn into infections? THank you in advance-
Answer: Breast fat necrosis after a breast lift
A small amount of fat necrosis is common after a large breast lift or breast reduction. I would defInitely let your surgeon know but I would not worry about any long term complications from this. If the biopsy showed fat necrosis you do not need to remove it. Good luck.

Answer: Fat Necrosis after Breast Lift?
Most likely your radiologist has noted calcifications in tissue that are present after breast lifting surgery. These findings are of no significant consequence and do not necessarily need to be excised. Nor do they turn into infections. Best to obtain a copy of your mammogram for comparison purposes in the future.
Best wishes.

Answer: Fat necrosis following breast lift surgery
Fat necrosis can happen after almost any operation that involves the subcutaneous tissue or fat layer. It basically occurs when the fat becomes detached from its blood supply. The consequence of fat necrosis is small calcifications that are visualized on a mammogram. This pattern of calcification is the of the same nature that can indicate a breast cancer so it is important that a differentiation can be made by the radiologist. On occasion a breast biopsy can be indicated.

Answer: Is Breast Fat Necrosis Common After Breast Lift?
Sorry for the worry you have endured during the evaluation.
Fat necrosis is a known complication of breast lift, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, and most of the "lift" operations. It occurs when there is insufficient blood supply to nourish the soft tissue following surgery.
it is more common in heavy patient, patients who needed a lot of lifting, and in smokers.
By all means you should see your surgeon for an examination and review of treatment possibilities. All the best.
