Can necrosis occur weeks after lip filler? (Photo)

Question

I had lip filler close to 3 weeks ago on top and bottom. Never had bruising or any complications, however today I have a small spot that has discoloration. Dark purple. Could this be necrosis? Can this occur weeks after like this? I believe Juvederm was what I had.

It's hard to tell from your picture, but this may be bruising. VBeam treatments can give improvement. I recommend following up with your injector for a formal evaluation. Best, Dr. Emer

The timeline you describe does not suggest necrosis.  Impending necrosis related to embolization is usually noted in a very close temporal fashion to the actual injection.  I recommend that yo return to your Injector for further evaluation.

The dark spot on your lip after a Juvederm  lip augmentation procedure may not be necrosis. When vascular occlusion occurs, there is typically pain and noticeable changes soon after the procedure. You may just have a bruise. If you have concerns, you should visit your surgeon. Hope this helps! Dr. Joseph.

The appearance and timing do not suggest necrosis. As others have stated, usually necrosis happens very quickly. It looks more like a bruise which can take a while to resolve in the lips. I would see your provider in person to be sure.

It is safe to say that noticing discoloration in the lips three weeks after filler placement does not indicate epidermolysis or necrosis. Necrosis after filler usually occurs due to direct injection into the vasculature causing cessation of blood flow or due to compression of the vasculature from surrounding filler placement. When vascular compromise does occur, pain and discoloration occurs almost immediately. Nonetheless, evaluation by your injector or an experienced aesthetic physician is recommended.

In most cases if a filler is inadvertently injected into an artery, changes occur almost immediately. The patient will feel pain almost immediately, skin discoloration like blanching of the area, or a darkish blue tint sets in , and break down of the skin occurs . It sounds like none of this happened to you, so I don’t think  you should have to worry about necrosis, but to be on th safe side contact the provider who took care of you for a more detailed evaluation.

This is a 'black & blue' mark' NOT necrosis! But you should return to see you injecting MD to evaluate the area. Sometimes the V-Beam laser will improve this issue faster.
