One surgeon said I had tuberous breasts and suggested a breast aug w/ lift 2nd surgeon said they weren't tuberous. He said my nipple to IMF fold was 5cm, not constricted, and that my nipple placement was low. He suggested a straightforward breast augmentation. He said he would give me an option to do a lift as well, but he truly felt that I could have a nice result without the lift. Do I have tuberous breasts? I like the 2nd doctor much better than the 1st but I am scared of looking even worse.
Answer: Breast Implants Thank you for your question and photos. İmplants alone you are a good candidate for breast implants without lifting. Breast implants are medical devices implanted under the breast tissue or chest muscle to increase breast size (augmentation) or to replace breast tissue that has been removed because of cancer or trauma, or that has failed to develop properly because of a severe breast abnormality (reconstruction). The FDA has approved implants for increasing breast size in women, for reconstruction after breast cancer surgery or trauma, and to correct developmental defects. Implants are also approved to correct or improve the result of a previous surgery. The FDA has approved two types of breast implants: saline-filled (salt water solution) and silicone gel-filled. Both have a silicone outer shell and vary in size, shell thickness, shell surface texture, and shape (contour).

Answer: I need other opinions, do I have mild tuberous breasts and would a correction with implants alone help? Hello, thank you for your question. Based on your photos, you do not appear to have tuberous breast. You may benefit from a breast augmentation. Your board certified plastic surgeon will be able to guide you to the correct size implant measurements and desires measurements of the chest wall and breast imprint width as well as knowledge of all breast implant sizes and profiles should make this process easy. Try on a profile bra with various silicone cc sizers your PS recommends under a tailored blouse, tank top, bikini, workout clothes, and other garments you typically wear so that you have the best idea of whether the garments fit as desired with the implant selected. Select the size that boosts your self-esteem, and fits your anatomy. Choosing an implant based on an aesthetic goal that exceeds your anatomic capacity may lead to complications and possibly revision.

Answer: Do I have tuberous breasts? Tuberous breasts are the most severe form of what is categorized as constricted breast deformities. Based on your pictures, you have a milder version of breast constriction. In my opinion, you can just start with a breast augmentation without a lift. As long as you don't try to go too large and choose an implant base width that fits your current breast dimension, you can get an acceptable result. I am not a big fan of trying to lower the breast folds when they are mildly constricted as this can often times create a double bubble or abnormal fold in the bottom of the breast.

Answer: I need other opinions, do I have mild tuberous breasts and would a correction with implants alone help? Hi. I would certainly not consider your breasts to be tuberous. They do appear slightly constricted inferiorly. But most of the time with either some internal loosening of the lower breast tissues (referred to as scoring) or just general relaxation of the tissues through the healing process from placement of breast implants, you should see improved shape. You have some mild asymmetry of the nipple position, but that is very commonly seen and I would not suggest doing a breast lift initially. A version of a breast lift referred to as a periareolar mastopexy can help flatten the conical shape of the breast if it ends up being a little more than what you desire, but that is at the cost of a scar that goes all the way around the areola. That typically heals nicely, but my expectation would be that you likely would not need that and it would probably be better to wait until you have gone through the healing process before making that decision. That can be a fairly straightforward procedure after the fact, if needed. Good luck and take care, Dr. Howell
