In September 2021 I was hit directly in the bridge of my nose with a small hard object. My nose instantly swelled and hurt. I went and had X-rays done which they said my nose was not broke. I did not bruise. But it did hurt for a few days. I understand I need rhinoplasty at this point, but I am trying to understand why my nose never went back to it's pre- injury size? All of these pictures are before & afters. Please help me understand.
Answer: Long healing time for noses Unfortunately, not only can noses take a very long time to heal after an injury, but also, scar tissue forms. Think of it this way: when something damages the nose, scar tissue is created by your own body in its attempt to heal the injury. After the trauma, you might have developed a deviation, an outfracturing of bone, scar tissue, or all of the above, which is why the nose looks different and is not returning to its original size. If you wanted to have surgery to achieve a look similar to your previous nose, you could have a rhinoplasty. I recommend you consult in person with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns and to decide on the best approach to solve your issues.

Answer: Rhinoplasty You may not have broken the bones but the cartilage was injured causing it to either fir scar tissue or become distorted. Very common and correctable with a rhinoplasty

Answer: I'm trying to understand why my injury never went back to normal size? You are likely miffed because your X-Rays failed to show a fracture. In general, we do not order nasal XRays after trauma, since they typically do not change the treatment for people after nasal trauma. By definition, if your nose has changed shape permanently after nasal trauma, you likely broke your nose. Sometimes fractures do not show on XRay, and people's noses are 2/3 cartilage, and XRay only reveals bone fractures. At this point, consider visiting several reputable rhinoplasty specialists so you could see what might be best for you moving forward. Thank you. Dr Joseph

Answer: Not all injuries show up on x-rays I'm very sorry you got hurt. The nose is made up of bone, cartilage, and different soft tissue layers. X-rays only show what is happening with the bony part of the nose. The cartilage of the nose can separate from the bony part or the cartilage can break and crack as well. This won't show up on x-ray. You can get soft tissue swelling/bruising that can thicken the soft tissue, cause excess bone to grow, or damage and warp cartilage. All of these won't show up on basic x-rays. Its difficult to tell exactly what has happened just based on the pictures you provided alone. However, if you visit with a rhinoplasty specialist, they should be able to help diagnose what is going on and offer you options for treatment. Hope this helps.

Answer: I'm trying to understand why my injury never went back to normal size Trauma to the nose can cause a variety of issues such as a displaced or nondisplaced nasal fracture, a dislocation of one or both of the upper lateral cartilages from the nasal bones, and a deviated septum. A thorough internal examination of the nose is going to be required to make a determination about how best to proceed
