I wish to elongate my face and have a better side profile. I believe Genioplasty is the right procedure but I’m not sure if I can achieve both of my desires. I don’t hear a lot about vertical lengthening which I do desire as my lower half is short because my chin is both short and does not project enough forward causing me to have a round face with lack of jawline definition.
Answer: Of course! We can absolutely make both vertical and horizontal improvements during a genioplasty. Genioplasty is one of our top cosmetic procedures, and we generally perform 1-2 each week. Our office provides morph photo simulations of expected outcomes, so that both you and the provider are on the same page about end results. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to discuss options further!

Answer: Chin augmentation The first step in the process is to get a quality assessment. The second is to get a clear understanding of all treatment options. The third step should be selecting the most talented and experience provider you have access to and the fourth step is to have the procedure if everything along the way has lined up correctly. Oral surgeons tend to do more of the sliding genioplasty. Plastic surgeons sometimes perform the procedure but seems to prefer doing chin implant more frequently. There are inherent differences in their training but doctors from both specialties treat this problem. You should definitely consult with oral surgeons because they tend to give it a more formal and in-depth assessment of the entire mandible including your dental occlusion and the relationship between the Mandible and Maxilla. You could also consult with plastic surgeons. During each consultation ask each provider to open up your portfolio and show you their entire collection of before and after pictures. Ask them to show you as many pictures as possible of previous patients who have similar facial characteristics to your own. For reference an experienced provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 set a before and after pictures of commonly performed procedures. I specifically for them to show you examples of excellent outcomes, average outcomes and outcomes that didn’t turn out as well as they had hoped for. Ask them specifically what the revision rate is and what the revision policy is. I suggest starting with at least five consultations and consider scheduling more if needed. Get familiarized with what quality results look like by reviewing lots of before and after pictures. Get pictures of your own face taking the same way plastic surgeons or oral surgeons may take before and after pictures. You should have a printed copy of pictures of your own face taken the same way medical facial photographs are taken. Look specifically for previous patients who had similar facial characteristics to your own. Create a greeting or reading system and use that during each consultation. Make a notes during each consultation regarding the quantity and quality of before and after pictures shown. You should also make notes of the openness of surgeons to talk about getting results different than the best results of their career. Providers are likely to want to stick to showing you collections of before and after pictures representing some of the best work of their career. This is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like or how many of these procedures any one provider has actually performed. You should also take a note of the thoroughness average consultation regarding all aspects of a proper consultation. Most people do not have a lot of experience consulting for aesthetic procedures. The providers on the other hand have lots of experience. The importance to get the most amount of information out of a consultation including the ability to vet the provider and get a clear understanding of what their skills and experience is like as paramount. These are definitely procedures that should ideally be done once and done right. There is no question significant differences based on who does the procedure. For that reason I recommend patient be highly selective and consult with multiple providers. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
