Should I stop taking Spironolactone after my mommy makeover?

Obviously, still consult with your surgeon but since you are 12 days post op without any issue, it sounds as if your body is tolerating the diuretic fine. I think you could keep it up with no issue. Best, Dr. Nazarian

The use of diuretics per se is not a problem. Nevertheless any medication should be cleared with your surgeon prior to the operation. At this point I would discuss the issue with your surgeon and see if he wants to discontinue.

Thank you for your question.  I will assume that your surgeon knew of your spironolactone use prior to your tummy tuck, but now 12 days out, you should be fine to continue as any additional risks are negligible, and will only reduce any swelling.  Hope this helps.  

The primary issue with the use of diuretics in the perioperative period is the concern for dehydration and associated electrolyte abnormalities (alteration of salt balance).  Abdominoplasty requires an incision across the abdominal wall and elevation of the skin and soft tissue from the underlying muscle.  The dissection requires some blood vessels to be divided, compromising the blood supply to the tissue of the abdominal wall.  The fear with diuretic use is that dehydration could further compromise perfusion of this tissue, increasing the risk of skin loss, fat necrosis, or wound healing problems.  By 12 days, if you are healing well, the risk of continuing the spironolactone is probably minimal, as the blood supply is beginning to recover as you heal.  Thanks for the question, and best of luck with your recovery.  

It is important to discuss all medications with your surgeon prior to surgery including prescription, over the counter and any supplements. At twelve days post op it should be fine to have resumed your preoperative medications but you should first clear this with your surgeon. She/He is most familiar with the details of your surgery and how you've been progressing through recovery.

Congratulations on your recent mommy makeover.   Fortunately, spironolactone is very safe and works well on female facial acne.   I would discuss the medication with your plastic surgeon or his/her nurse.   Since you have been on the medication for 2 years, continuation during your recovery process is probably fine. 

It should be fine to continue taking your medications but definitely talk to your PS about it.   Make sure to continue following your postop instructions.

 The use of diuretics is so widespread that there is a lot of experience to say that they are safe to continue through your surgery. I am glad that you are doing well with your surgery also. You have just found out that some advice found on the internet is not accurate.

Assuming you are doing well, without evidence of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance problems, continuing the diuretic  should not be a problem. Congratulations on your abdominoplasty! Spironolactone is a diuretic as you have mentioned. Therefore, depending on the indication for which it is used it may cause dehydration perioperatively. However, if you are 12 days postop and you do not feel dizzy or lightheaded then likely your fluid status is normal. Dehydration can also lead to constipation which can be a problem after abdominoplasty. Spironolactone, if anything can help to decrease swelling by removing fluid from the body. Some of the other side effects include causing low potassium and other electrolyte abnormalities. Therefore, from my standpoint based on your description it is reasonable to continue the medication as long as you are not constipated.  I would, however, suggest that you be monitored by your primary care physician or whomever prescribed you the medication initially to make sure you are on the appropriate dosage.
