Will I be a dress size smaller 6 weeks after liposuction?

Laser liposuction is good for problem areas of fat, but lacks body shaping. For best results, I recommend a hi definition procedure like VASER liposuction revision, if you're a candidate. allabouteyes I appreciate your concern, but please understand liposuction should not be considered a weight-loss tool. It is an excellent device to improve contour, especially areas of the body unresponsive to diet and exercise. However, it is fairly common to drop at least one dress size after liposuction within the areas you are planning to treat. While much of the swelling will be gone after six weeks, it can take as long as six months for all swelling to go away. It is extremely important for you to adopt a healthy diet and exercise regimen both before and after your surgery to maximize your results. Good luck. 

You will likely only lose a few pounds from the liposuction procedures, not 20.  Liposuction can make dramatic changes in body contour, but you cannot lose any dramatic amount of weight with it.The amount of fat liposuctioned varies with the patient.  This will depend upon the preoperative fatty content of your abdomen, back, flanks, and legs, and the amount of fat the surgeon can remove. If the waist was smaller at one time, the waist can likely be reduced to those same measurements or smaller provided the muscular and fascial integrity has remained the same.  Swelling and healing as well as scar maturation can persist for 6 months and sometimes up to 1 year following liposuction.  Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but a contouring one. To achieve the best results, and to have the safest surgery, it is best if you reach your goal weight before the procedure(s).
In general, you need to be physically healthy and at a stable weight, have realistic expectations, non-smoker and your BMI needs to be 33 or less.

Since liposuction is a contouring procedure, most patient do decrease inches in those areas that the procedure focused on. So typically patients doe drop a dress size. That being said, swelling cn take months to resolve. Good luck to you!

Although you will only lose a few pounds from liposuction, it can change body contours sufficiently to reduce a dress size.  Two inches is more than a size and so it is difficult to predict the outcome in any specific case. Three weeks is too short a time period as there may be significant swelling.

I typically don't ever promise patients that they will change in regards to inches, pounds or clothing sizes. Many people do but they suppressing it number of people don't.  Results are fairly close to final by six weeks and final or very close to final by three months. Some people are exceptionally good candidates for liposuction while others are not. Typically the best candidates have tight skin and substantial amounts of subcutaneous fat. Having had weight gain does not necessarily make someone a good candidate for liposuction.  Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
