Answer: Time Yes, you are only 1.5 weeks out from surgery. I would give it more time. If it doesn't improve, I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with. Finally, make sure your surgeon is a Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Best,Dr. DesaiBeverly Hills Institute for Aesthetic Plastic SurgeryHarvard Educated, Beverly Hills & Miami Beach TrainedDouble Board-Certified, Double Fellowship-Trained Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Incisions are raised and discolored, will they flatten out? Great question. You are describing normal healing of new incisions. Generally scars will flatten and become lighter or time. Scars usually mature around 12 months. Your plastic surgeon may suggest a scar cream to use. Good luck.

Answer: 11 days post-op breast augmentation and incisions are very raised, thick and discolored. Will they flatten out? After a surgeon makes an incision, and then closes the incision, the incision itself will be very flat. That's when your body goes to work and all of the cells that are needed for repair of the wound start to come in to the area the whole incision gets very crowded with new cells that are very busy making new collagen and other factors that help to heal the wound---so the wound gets very crowded and becomes very lumpy. That's all normal. The wound also gets very red because there's a lot higher traffic, (more and more cells keep coming into the wound), and the blood vessels have to open up to accommodate them and that's why the wound turns red because the vessels are all dilated and have to adjust to the increase in traffic. It will even get MORE red and raised over the next couple of weeks and that will peak at three weeks which is called the 'healing ridge'. This is a time when patients can become alarmed because instead of getting better and flatter the wounds look more raised and worse! I tell all my patients that at three weeks there wounds will be lump, bump and raised and not to worry. When you see the healing ridge that's when you should begin to massage the wound which will help to organize the layers of collagen bundles into nicely layered and organized stacks. The massage is the most important step you can perform in order to get the very best scar. Let me just repeat that: massage is the most important step you can perform in order to get the very best scar. Patients are always asking "what is the best topical ointment for a scar" but the first step, and the very best step to get the best scar is MASSAGE! It will take about a full year for all of this to go down and you can benefit the wound by massaging for a complete 12 months. So what you are experiencing is totally natural, and is to be expected and actually is to be desired. If you want to use a topical, then I would suggest adding Kelo-Cote. It is a topical silicone and can help with the appearance of your scar. Silicone is also a great lubricant which can aid the massage. We routinely use silicone sheeting and pressure in burn patients and silicone has been shown to improve the scar. Remember it takes a full 12 months for a wound to mature and even longer for the scar to fade.
