Clear liquid diet 48hrs before mommy makeover procedure?

Question

My dr instructed me to be on clear liquid diet for 48hrs before augmentation+tummy tuck. Does that make sense?? I am on hour 19 and honestly i feel kinda sick already

Thank you for your question. I personally have patients discontinue food and beverage at midnight the night before your procedure so that you would have at least 8 hours with no food or drink before your surgery. I have never heard of a clear liquid diet for any procedure in plastic surgery. It is important to communicate your worries with your physician. You chose him/her because you have a certain amount of trust in them, so I would follow their protocol. Best of luck!

Thank you for your question.  Getting yourself cleaned out before your procedure will allow your surgeon to perform a tighter closure and give you a better result.  It also helps that you won't be straining to have a bowel movement the first couple of days after surgery.  After surgery, increased fluid intake and walking will generally get your bowels back to regularity.

This is a preference by your surgeon.  I encourage you to speak with him/her if you are not feeling well.  I also encourage you to ask questions if there is anything you want clarified regarding your surgery.  Open communication is very important to your surgeon, and to your surgical success.

Some surgeons "clear out" the bowels before a surgery where you will be on narcotics postoperatively.  The reasoning is that opioids will constipate you and if the bowels have only liquid and not solids, constipation will not be an issue.  Probably more important for colonoscopy than tummy tuck!  I think the real answer is to limit the amount of pain post operatively so you can stop all narcotics.  Things like blocks, NSAIDs, and good surgical technique - all can help with that.  Always follow your surgeon's recommendations - you are a team!

It is important to follow the directions given by your surgeon, but if you are not feeling well I would suggest you contact the office for instructions. We have patients stop eating 8 hours prior to surgery because of the anesthesia.
