Thank you for your question. Yes, it's possible to do a mommy makeover with a BMI of 32 as long as your healthy. Many patients struggle to achieve their optimal weight despite diet and exercise. However, to reduce your risks during surgery and ensure optimal results it's important to maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet to prepare for surgery. The closer you are to your ideal weight before surgery the better your result will be. Combination procedures can give powerful results but SAFETY is KEY. You definitely have to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety. Don’t settle for less than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.
I recommend achieving a BMI of 30 or less before undergoing surgery because the risk of complications and irregularities during the healing process goes up with each excess pound. In most cases, however, 30 is just a guideline. It's better to evaluate each patient on a case-by-case basis. If you're in generally good health and find that your "happy weight" (the one that you can easily maintain without sacrificing your wellness) puts you at a BMI of 32, I'd rather perform the mommy makeover at that weight than force you to get down to a BMI of 30. Be sure you're well educated on the potential risks, and weigh them closely against the benefits of surgery before proceeding.
Plastic surgery literature shows that if your BMI is 35 or greater you are at increased risk for complications for wound healing, infection, seroma formation, etc. A BMI of 30 or below will help your procedure have a lower risk and your outcome be more attractive and more worthwhile. Do the best you can, this is a big surgery and worth the extra effort to get your most ideal result! Good luck! Dr. Aitken
Far more important than deciding if MM is for you is the skill and experience of your plastic surgeon. Choose your surgeon rather than the technique and let him explain why one technique may be better than another and if you need a tummy tuck. Many board certified plastic surgeons provide a free first time consult and you should take advantage of that! A woman’s body can be unexpectedly altered nearly from head-to-toe after pregnancy and childbirth. Mommy makeover procedures are varied yet specific, allowing you to restore and rejuvenate your body to a youthful, healthier look, regardless of how you have been affected by pregnancy.Mommy makeover procedures include:Breast augmentation: After pregnancy, a woman’s breasts may change dramatically, whether or not she even chooses to breastfeed her child. After the need for breastmilk production passes, breasts will often reduce in size but leave excess loose skin, especially in the upper region. Breast augmentation can restore a woman’s breasts to her ideal shape and size.Breast lift:Removing excess skin around the breasts following a pregnancy can tighten and visibly lift the breast. Depending the amount of “lifting” required, the incisions necessary to complete the procedure may vary but are generally low.Tummy tuck:Most women will experience a noticeable change to their abdominal region after pregnancy, either caused by excess skin and increased body fat, or a weakening of the muscles that causes the stomach to sag. Another common condition is a protruding bellybutton. All of these alterations can be improved and restored through a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. In some cases, stretch marks can be eliminated entirely, or the bellybutton can be removed through umbilicoplasty.Liposuction: Pregnant or nursing women can experience fat build ups in new locations throughout their bodies, including the stomach, hips, legs, and arms. Liposuction is an easy and effective way to address these extra fat pockets. We can also help you figure out if diet and exercise used in conjunction with liposuction will be to your benefit.Labiaplasty: The birth canal undergoes great stress and pressure when giving birth, sometimes causing tears or damage to the labia and vagina. Labiaplasty and vaginal tightening are two outpatient procedures we can use to restore the elasticity and strength of your labia and vagina.Skin pigment correction: Sometimes called “the mask of pregnancy,” discolored splotches of brown and red often appear on a pregnant woman’s face. Our skin aesthetician from BioSpa, our clinical skin care department, can use laser treatments, chemical peels, gradual bleaching, and other gentle yet effective techniques to correct alterations in your skin pigmentation.Varicose vein removal: Darkened and thickened veins that arise during pregnancy may be distracting, unpleasant, and permanent. Talk to our team about varicose vein removal and reduction procedures, including lasers, injections, and minimal outpatient surgery options.Using a combination of operations and procedures is also highly recommended. Not only will you likely reduce the overall cost of your mommy makeover, but you reduce the amount of anesthetics and the recovery time needed after procedures. Ask our team about how you can combine operations into the least number of visits possible.#mommymakeover #candidateMM
The closer you are to your ideal body weight the fewer complications you will have with surgery and the better you will look cosmetically. A BMI between 25-30 would place you in the "overweight" category which is better than "obese" which is > 30. If you can get your BMI below 25 (normal weight) then that's even better. Consult with your plastic surgeon again if you still are not certain.Best wishes,Dr.Bruno
Thanks for the question. The recommendation is to have equal or less than 30 to avoid unnecessary risks. If you are planning to achieve the proper BMI (Which is the correct thing to do) I recommend you to go to a consult with a nutritionist and follow his advices. Kind regards
Your current BMI of 32 increases the risk for complications of surgery/recovery and diminishes the results that could be achieved if you reached a BMI of 30. Understand that a BMI of 30 does not, in and of itself, guarantee candidacy for a MM; your medical history would need to be reviewed by a board certified plastic surgeon who could discuss a plan that is best for you. There is certainly variability in this based upon lean body mass and body habitus. If you have reached a stable, safe weight, MM can be performed.
Thank you for your question. There is no hard and fast rule that says you have to have a BMI of under 30 for surgery. It is all a spectrum of risk and benefit. We know that patients who are overweight have a higher incidence of complications such as wound healing problems, infections, blood clots, etc. In addition, there are some that thing that overweight patients have poorer satisfaction with cosmetic surgery outcomes. Whatever the reason, every surgeon sets his or her parameters for what they will tolerate in terms of risk. Your surgeon has set it at 30, others might be more willing to take on additional risk and do your surgery now. The real question is don't you want to do everything you can to decrease your chance of having a complication? If the answer is yes, then you should be willing to work as hard as possible to reach a more healthy weight prior to considering cosmetic surgery.Hope this helps!
To be a good candidate for multiple procedures done at the same time it is best to be closer to your ideal weight and in good health. If you are unable to lose weight, you might consider dividing the procedures into two or more stages to decrease your risk of complications. Good luck.
Hello, good afternoon, thanks for your question. Actually it depends also on the size and height of the patient, but it will be better for you to have it under 30 if you want to go for a mommy makeover, and also your hemoglobin levels up to 13.5 or even more.
