How do I reduce redness in a scar?

Question

I recently got a mole removed, about the size of an eraser. It left a scar, which I expected but the scar is really red and sometimes purpleish. I was using mederma scar remover at first but recently bought dermefface fx7 because reviews said it was more potent. I've been using it for a couple weeks and so far I don't notice any improvement. I know scars take time but is there anything else I can do to help reduce redness? Can I put on the dermefface and then place a silicone scar sheet on top?

For up to 3 months post operatively, you can apply a scar gel .  I recommend to my patients, a scar gel called bio-corneum.  It has silicone and an spf mixed in the gel.  Avoiding sun,tanning, etc will also reduce permanent redness/darkness at scar as well.

Microneedling can be helpful but a consistently good treatment for red scars is the pulse dye laser which can lighten this scar and flatten it in one session.

Usually the most reliable approach is to treat with pulsed dye laser.  It generally takes more than one treatment session to see the best results.  For at home treatment, it often helps to use silicone gel sheeting or another type of silicone product.
