Bulge above scar after Tummy Tuck/Lipo (Photo)

Question

I am 6 weeks post op tummy tuck and flank lipo. I'm worried that I have a hernia or seroma. The bulge is about as big as my hand on my left side only. I don't see my surgeon for another 10 days. Please give opinion. Thank You

Hello, and thank you for your question. The bulge you are seeing is either swelling or a fluid collection (seroma). These are both very common after tummy tuck, even at six weeks post-op. It is possible to determine fluid vs swelling by feeling the bulge: swelling feels hard/lumpy whereas fluid feels soft. I recommend seeing your plastic surgeon for an evaluation; good luck,Shain A. This situation needs to be evaluated by your surgeon.  If a seroma has formed your surgeon can aspirate it in the office to help it resolve.  Contact your surgeon's office to advise of your concern to see if they would like to see you earlier.

If you have a postoperative concern, you should bring the issue up to your surgeon.  They have a better ability to evaluate your issues and make sure there are no acute problems than asking online sites like this one.

Thank you for your question and submitting your photos.  Your are still quite early in the recovery process and the residual swelling may take longer to fully resolve.  If you are concerned about any aspect of your recovery it is always best and safest to talk to your surgeon and arrange follow up sooner if needed.
