I’m trying to minimize my soon to be scarred abdomen. I love my light naturally tan olive skin but have a large scar from a surgery as Baby that is so white, noticeable and does not tan. I don’t want my TT scar to look like this. I’ve read varying reviews on embrace, silicone sheets/creams, mederma, and essential oils. What works best??
Answer: Scar Treatment following Surgery Scars may actually appear to worsen during the first three to six months as they heal, but this is normal. Expect it to take nine months to a year before your scars flatten out and lighten in colour. While they'll never disappear completely, abdominal scars will not show under most clothing, even under bathing suits. In my practice, I advise patients to start using a silicone based sheeting once the incisions have completed healed and redness associated with healing has subsided. At the patient’s one month follow up, it is determined if the patient is ready to begin this scar treatment. A silicone sheeting can be applied to the incision sites and adheres to the skin for 5-7 days. Patients have the flexibility of cutting the sheets into specific sizes for their need. Rubbing the sheeting into place releases the silicone gel into the area and helps break down the scar tissue. With continuous use of the product, patients will see that the areas will become flatter and the colour of the area will lighten. Patients are encouraged to begin this scar therapy within the first 3 months of recovery for best results.

Answer: Scar treatment There are several options available for scar treatment. Our patients have had nice results with the Embrace Scar Therapy system. Silicone sheets are also an option. The key is to use them consistently for several weeks. Ask your surgeon what is recommended for you.

Answer: Scar therapy To minimize the appearance of tummy tuck scars, silicone gel and silicone sheets are quite effective. Embrace in particular is effective at offloading tension on the scar in the first few months, although it can cost about $500. Also minimizing tension on the scar through a flexed position early on in recovery can help also. There are no good clinical trials to support the use of mederma.Best wishes,Dr.Bruno

Answer: Scar cream Thank you for your question! For my patients, I recommend that they use a silicone based scar cream called biocorneum for 6 months to 1 year post surgery. Silicone is a key ingredient in helping scars fade. I recommend discussing specific scar creams and treatments with your plastic surgeon. Best of luck!
