I had 8 units botox at 11 weeks pregnant in the corner of my eyes. How harmful is this to my baby?

While there are no studies that address the effects of Botox on developing fetuses, it still should be avoided during pregnancy and nursing. That said, there is no reason to be alarmed. I have never heard of any ill effects on a fetus or baby from Botox and many women have made the same “mistake” that you have. Be assured, only very small doses of Botox are present in 8 Units. Congratulations on your new baby to be! There is no evidence that Botox can cause any harm to your baby. Botox is a local treatment that affects just the muscle into which it is injected. The amount of active ingredient is very small and it does not circulate in your blood. The use of Botox has never been studied in pregnant women so it is NOT approved for use in pregnant women.  But, many women have had Botox while pregnant and have suffered no adverse effects. We recommend to wait until after you’ve finished nursing before getting another treatment — just to be safe. Please consult a board-certified dermatologist when you’re ready for anti-aging treatments again. 

Currently there are no studies to show the effects of botox on pregnancy. Botox is localized into the muscle and women have gotten the treatment before unknowing they were pregnant with no complication. I would let your OBY/GYN know that you got injected. However your injector should have asked you of any changes in health during your appointment. 

While there are no studies on pregnant women and Botox, it is unlikely to harm the fetus. A lot of women inadvertently get Botox and then find out they are pregnant. If you remain concerned, I recommend following up with your OB/GYN. Best, Dr. Emer

There should be no harm to your unborn baby because of the Botox treatment you had to your crow's feet when you were 11 weeks pregnant.  The Botox just stays around the area where it was injected and would not circulate throughout your body.  Additionally, the amount of Botox used for cosmetic purposes is so small, that even if it did circulate, it should not produce any problem for you or your unborn baby.  I am not aware of any studies of Botox on pregnant women.  Doctors would not study this because they would not want to take any risk of performing such a study.  Botox is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women because there are no studies to confirm or deny any possible risk, but I do not believe you have done any harm with your recent treatment.    

Botox will not harm your baby. However, you should not use it nor any other unnecessary chemicals or substances while pregnant or nursing. This is a precautionary measure, so please do not stress out about using Botox. Just wait until you’ve finished nursing to try it again. A board-certified dermatologist will be able to help you again once you’re ready.

Botox (botulinum toxin) is a chemical that temporarily paralyzes the muscle.  It works locally at the nerve endings in the muscle itself.  Unless it were injected into a vein or artery and taken by the bloodstream to a distant site, it primarily has a local effect.  In other words, it acts on the muscle where the injection is placed.  The small muscles around the eye are VERY FAR away from the baby.
By the time any of the substance were to be absorbed by the bloodstream and processed processed by the mother's body and then distributed to the baby, it would be gone.  Per the Allergan package insert, "Using currently available analytical technology, it is not possible to detect Botox in the peripheral blood following intramuscular injection at the recommended doses."   That means they cannot even detect it in the mother's blood.  So, it is unlikely to get to the baby.  
There are no studies to show whether or not Botox is safe for the baby during pregnancy.  So, there is no proof that it is dangerous.  In this case, where only 8 units were used, it would be even less likely that there would be any effect on the baby at all. 

There have been no studies to date that study botox in pregnant women.  The amount that you got is a very low dose.  There have been many instances of women who got botox and did not know they were pregnant. There have been no adverse events reported due to the botox.  Discuss it with your ob-gyn if you have concerns.

Although nothing is approved for use during pregnancy and there are no studies regarding Botox and pregnancy there have been many instances of pregnancy occurring in conjunction with Botox and there is no effect on you or the baby
