Masseter Botox and facelift?

Question

I had a successful facelift in January as I was unhappy with my jowls. Thankfully my jowls have gone (for now!) and I like my new jaw line, I am 47. A year or so prior to the facelift I had Botox in the masseter as my jaw muscle was very tight and with a round face it was making my face wider, the Botox helped. I'm considering Botox again to reduce the jaw tightness but wanted to ask if it would reduce the effect of my facelift, would this encourage jowls return if my face thinned? Many thanks.

Hello there. Congratulations on a successful facelift. Generally, masseter treatment would not affect your jawline but as always an examination would help us determine whether this is likely. Our skin does have the ability to have some form of laxity so you should be fine.

Botox for the jaw typically does not cause skin laxity around the face, even in older patients with some skin elastic tissues in my experience.

Treatment to reduce masseter size and slim the face is useful but needs to be regular so that the muscle thins. It is quite common to have thick masseters in tooth grinders and I find this effective in some patients provided they have a normal bite. I do not think it is likely to affect your face lift adversely to have this treatment.

Even if you did not have a facelift, the botox for jaw reduction CAN worsen your jowels.    However since you already had the facelift there may be slight worsening or your jowels but would not be as bad as before you had the facelift.   Hope this helps.

It is difficult to tell what you might need without photos and more discussion but generally you should get some benefit from Botox to the masseters without a bad effect on the facelift appearance

Great question. The answer depends on the quality of your skin and any skin laxity you may have. If your skin quality is good and skin laxity is minimal, then Botox/Dysport treatment of the masseters will not have any effect on your jawline. However, if you have significant skin laxity, then reducing the masseter muscle bulk (which maybe giving support to the loose skin) may actually reduce jawline definition.

Botox will help make masseter/ jaw muscles smaller.
Facelifts tend to tighten skin and deeper SMAS, neither of which are muscle.
Try to put volume in the mid face to help lift jowels.
