Can someone please tell me if it is safe to have dermal fillers with hypothyroidism? I've been told by different doctors different answers. So am I better not chancing it? Fillers actually sound quite dangerous. I'm not sure how they are still so popular . I'd really like to have some volume but am very hesitant. Thank you for any responses. :)

Answer: Using cosmetic dermal fillers in people with thyroid disease There is no issue in treating patients with hyper or hypothyroidism with cosmetic injectable dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, etc. It would be entirely safe in your scenario. Most importantly, get your injection from a highly trained and experienced physician injector such as a dermatologist to ensure you get the best results with the least pain/bruising and lowest possible risk of side effects.

Answer: Are dermal fillers safe with hypothyroidism or not? Thank you for the question. Thyroid disease is a common metabolical disorder, especially in females, and we often see patients who request dermal fillers for facial rejuvenation who have this disorder. According to our current understanding, dermal fillers can be safely used in patients with a history of hypothyroidism. It is important however, if a patient presents with this history, to both look for clinical signs of severe hypothyroidism as well as hyperthyroidism (which can result from taking taking too much thyroid replacement medicine). If thyroid function is poorly controlled, it can be dangerous to a patients health and should be corrected before undergoing any elective procedure including placement of dermal fillers. An in-person consultation with a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is an essential first step in safely obtaining the treatment you desire.

Answer: Dermal Fillers and Hypothryoidism Thank you for your question! I can understand your hesitancy about fillers. There are certainly risks associated, although fillers do have a very good safety profile. Dermal fillers are not known to be contraindicated in people with hypothyroidism. However, a detailed consultation with a qualified physician in your area will ensure that dermal fillers are right for you as well as a great time to discuss all the possible safety concerns. All the best - Dr. Hetz.
