Is 5 weeks enough time to heal if I get breast implants before my wedding?

The short answer is that 5 weeks is NOT enough time.The long answer is that I would suggest at least 12 weeks between breast augmentation and any large event like a vacation, and especially for a wedding.You will need to allow the muscle to recover adequately before any strong movements of your chest or arms or before any vigorous or strong massage of the breast tissue.If you still have more questions then I would recommend reading more about breast augmentation in my free breast augmentation planner at aBetterBreast dot com

Generally speaking, you should be able to have your wedding five weeks after surgery without concern. In our practice, we allow patients to drive after three days, and at one month there are no activity restrictions. Most of the swelling has resolved by then allowing for clothing selection. Rarely a postoperative complcation might affect this timing. Discuss your concerns with your surgeon and inquire what their recovery protocol is.

Thanks for your question and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!  Although 5 weeks should be plenty of time to heal after  a breast augmentation, there are always unforeseen complications.  At this point I would see a few surgeon can either move up your date or wait until afterwards.  Everything will most likely go smoothly. However, there is always a small chance that you could need revision surgery etc. which is the last stressor you need right before your big day!  I would not risk it at this point.  Best to consult with your surgeon. Dear Nuttmeg,the majority of breast augmentation patients need one week of downtime. Depending on the work environment (heavy lifting, etc) more time off may be necessary. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after surgery to avoid blood clots in the legs. I suggest that you follow your plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions, especially on the level of activity that you can do and your scheduled follow up checkups, for faster and recovery.Daniel Barrett, MD

While recovery will vary from patient to patient and procedure to procedure, patients should expect an initial healing period of 4-6 weeks. Patients can expect the progressive resolution of swelling, bruising and discomfort over this period. The implants will also typically "settle" over these initial few weeks as lower pole tissue stretches to accommodate the increased volume.With regards to your specific question, 5 weeks should be adequate for initial healing, however, "should" may not be adequate when we are discussing a wedding dress fit. I would encourage delaying surgery until after "the big day" so as to avoid the added pressures of healing/fitting. Alternatively, allowing for more time between surgery and "the big day" so as to be certain.As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Thanks for reaching out. This is a tough question to answer! Not really an exact answer to give, as you mentioned, I think sizing for your dress would be the biggest issue! At 5 weeks you should be fine, but swelling could still be present and making sure your dress fits properly might be tough. Dear Nuttmeg,The overwhelming likelihood is that you will be ready for your wedding 5 weeks after a breast augmentation, assuming that there are no complications or unexpected occurrences.  You can also expect that your implants will likely be "riding high" on your chest wall that soon after surgery, which might be the extra upper breast fullness you need to boost your confidence.  However, if there is a complication, is it worth the expense and planning that you have gone through to possibly jeopardize perhaps the most important day of your life?  Only you can decide.  Good luck!
