Can microneedling rebuild collagen in temples?

Question

I've had bad luck with fillers in the past (excessive swelling, uneven results) and I'm afraid of side effects of sculptra (nodules, lumpiness) but my temples are getting hollow, can micro needling rebuild collagen in this area and if so how often can I do it? Thank you!

Although microneedling has been shown to rebuild collagen, it will probably not be to the extent that you were looking for to fill in your temples. It will thicken the skin but will not replace volume. It's best to seek your surgeon's advise of alternative fillers. Good luck!

Thank you for your question.  Microneedling is not going to add volume to hollowed out temples.  Filler is often placed into one of two planes in the temples. It can be placed over the superficial layer of the deep temporal fascia  (just over muscle), or it can be placed deeper, over the periosteum of the bone.  Both locations are deep enough that you should not have problems with nodules when properly placed (particularly over the bone (very deep).  See a skilled injector with experience in this area.  The one downside to injections through muscle over bone is that you will be a little more sore for a few days, similar to the soreness you get if you had chewed gum for a couple hours because of the irritation of the temporalis muscle.  I prefer Radiesse for the temples because it is long lasting, less of a pain to work with than Sculptra, and the results are seen immediately.

The answer is yes. Microneedling will increase collagen in the skin but it will not add volume to the area. The needling technique is ideal for acne scarring and fine lines but will not fill the temporal region like fillers can.I am sorry your filler experience has not been postive. Personally I would attribute that to the injector and not the products. I have had excellent results with sculptra and restylane in this area. These products need to be placed deeply to avoid the complications you mention.Seek out an experienced board certified plastic surgeon to evaluate and inform you of all your options in this area.Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

We perform microneedling in the temples all the time.  The most common indication for this is acne scarring.  Microneedling helps to stimulate new collagen production and smooth out skin imperfections.  It is a great treatment but it will not add much volume if the temples are very hollow.  Fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane work well in the temple to restore volume.  I prefer hyaluronic acid fillers in this area since they can be dissolved if needed.  Lumpiness can generally be avoided by blending the filler with lidocaine or saline prior to injection.  It all depends on the skill and artistry of your injector.
