I had Fat Transfer to face 5 days ago. What can I use to help the swelling go down?

I had fat transfer to my face 5 days ago and I'm still unrecognizable. I'm very scared and I hope I look normal soon..... What can I use to help the swelling go down? Ice, Preparation H? I'm having doubts that I even did it..... Are they removable?? I'm starting to panic :( When I smile, I feel them in my cheeks and they're so big!! I know it takes 3 weeks for the swelling to go down, but there has to be some thing I can do to speed it up?

If the swelling is substantial I would consider a short course of prednisone, icing of the area, OTC ibuprofen.  It takes sometime for the area to look normal in some cases, so if you are concerned speak to your physician but I would give it a little time to heal.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Most patients can expect a significant degree of swelling after fat transfer to the face.  Icing and elevation can help.  Although controversial, Arnica can help some patients as well.  Unfortunately, beyond doing these things which can improve your swelling mildly, there is little you can do to speed things up.  Best wishes for your recovery.

If you are really swollen you can talk to your doctor about taking a Medrol dose pack, which is a steroid and acts as an anti-inflammatory.  You can also take some Ibuprofen - 400-600mg 3 times a day which will help. this is over the counter - generic or motrin.

A very good natural anti-inflammatory is cold chamomile tea . You may prepare a big pitcher and place it in the refrigerator. Submerge a facial towel in the cold tea and place it on your face . Do this as much as needed . Best wsihes

Patience!You can expect swelling after fat grafting.  I would advise AGAINST ice after fat grafting.  It can harm the graft material.  I would not expect Arnica to have any impact other than a placebo effect.  Elevation and time should help you improve.  Hang in there.

Swelling is a normal response to the surgery and the healing process. All swelling will go away with time. For post operative care it is best to check with your doctor.

My patients have been very pleased- as have I- with arnica Montana which is an herbal medicine that helps with bruising and swelling.  I've been so impressed with it, I recommend it to almost all of my patients.  Some nutrition stores may carry it- call ahead to make sure.  It comes in a pill or topical gel form- whichever you prefer.
