Are PRP results permanent?

Hello Doctors, I lost around 50% of hair from the combination of bad hair dye jobs and Graves disease. I stopped dyeing my hair and had my thyroid removed 3 years ago. My hair is slowly growing back but I still have alot of bald spots and areas where I don't think the hair is growing in. If I undergo the prp treatment will the hair continue to grow after stopping the treatment? Or is this something where you have to keep getting done in order for the hair to keep coming in? Thank you.

In my opinion, you need to see a hair expert. You need a diagnosis which will be determined by examination, possibly blood work and biopsy. PRP functions better for certain diagnoses. The duration of effect and need for retreatment is determined by your specific condition. In general, PRP does not last more than six to nine months.PRPHAIRMD.COM

Unfortunately PRP for hair loss is not permanent.  We are using it monthly for about 3-6 months and then twice a year afterwards, with good results.  Since your situation has more specific issues than just premature hair loss, you might ask your endocrinologist what to expect based on your medical issues.Keep in mind, there other adjuvant treatments as well- propecia and rogaine.Good luck!In good health,Ellen Mahony, MD

PRP has proven to be effective in the arena of hair restoration both as an adjunct to grafting as well as standalone treatment for those who may not (yet) be a candidate for grafting. Patients have demonstrated slowed loss, thickening of existing hair and regrowth. The typical duration of effect is 6-9 months with most patients being treated 2x yearly (at least initially).Ultimately, whether or not PRP will be effective will depend upon your diagnosis. Some causes of hair loss will respond better to other medical/chemical/surgical therapies. PRP is by no means a magic bullet.As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS) with experience in hair restoration.

Hair loss is a very individual experience.  Each case is going to be different than the next.  PRP is used to stimulate hair growth however, this growth is short-term, limited and can still shed out. PRP (alone) does not reverse hair thinning.  We typically encourage patients to use PRP in conjunction with their hair transplant procedure

I cannot opine if PRP will be of benefit to you absent a complete workup. Every effective treatment for hair loss, including PRP, must be maintained or the benefits will be lost in a few months. Generally PRP maintains results for 6-9 months, then requires re-treatment.

PRP can restore hair. The growth factors from the platelets can increase blood flow and nutrients to the hair follicles. In addition, there can be a rejuvenation of the bulb of the hair. It is typically recommended that you have a series of treatments initially with touch-ups from 6 months to 1 year after your series.
