Am I okay to use breathe right strips 5 months post op (rhinoplasty)?

Question

I had my rhinoplasty 5 months ago. (Very happy with the results) But my breathing isn't 100%. I had no issues prior. No deviated septum or any other issues. I had a hump removal & tip reduction. I'd say my breathing is at about 70-90% but at night it gets worse. Drops to 60-70% breathing. I've noticed if I pull on the sides of my cheek/nose I can breathe better. Am I ok to use breathe right strips to make it easier to breathe at night? Also, is it possible for it to still be internal swelling?

Yes you can use breath strips now.  You may still have a small amount of residual swelling at the moment but you can resume all pre-operative activities.Best of luck and hope this information helps!

I think that you would be fine to use Breathe-Rite strips at this point in your recovery.  I think that they will help with your breathing as the swelling goes down inside your nose and also help with the swelling on the outside of your nose.

I would be sure to discuss your breathing concerns with your doctor.  There should be no harm in using a breathe right strips, but it may be beneficial to have your doctor examine your nose and find out if there's something that he can address to give you longer lasting relief.

You will do no harm by using the breathe rite strips to help you breathe better. Sometimes after a rhinoplasty procedure the breathing can be reduced from what it was before surgery. Often swelling is present but should resolve over one year. In addition, it is possible that in reducing the size of your nose that the nasal valve area might be compromised. You should speak to your surgeon about your concerns.

You can certainly use breathe right strips at bedtime five months after rhinoplasty surgery without worry. The cause of your nighttime nasal blockage would require an examination. Hope this helps. Dr. Joseph

I am glad that you are happy with your rhinoplasty results.  I suspect that the airway is probably alright as well given the fact that the nose looks good.  Breathe rite strips are completely fine.  You are performing a Cottle maneuver and this maneuver usually results in improved airflow through the nose even if there are no complaints of obstruction prior to the maneuver.  In more severe cases nasal valve procedures may be necessary.

In my opinion, I could see no problem with using breathe right strips 5 months post-op unless I believe the nose is still changing shape considerably in which case, the consistent use of breathe right strips could cause the shape to change. I would check with your surgeon on whether they advise the use of the breathe right strips.
