How common is it that I'm still trying to clear up a bacterial infection 9 months post-op tummy tuck?

Thank you for your question. It is not common to have a bacterial infection 9 months after a tummy tuck. The next time one of these abscesses is drained, I'd recommend having cultures taken to identify the bacteria, which will allow for targeted antibiotic treatment.

There's a possibility that the sutures became secondarily infected. However, at this point, most of the absorbable Vicryl sutures should have dissolved. Another potential issue is infection of the permanent sutures, which might require oral or even IV antibiotics. In rare cases, it may be necessary to remove the permanent sutures.

I am so very sorry to hear about your troubles with surgery. It is possible that some of your permanent sutures have gotten infected at this fat out in time. This is not very common at all.

I'm sorry to hear of all the issues you've been experiencing since your tummy tuck. It is rare to still be dealing with lingering infection at this point. Your surgeon may want to consult with an infection disease specialist to determine the best course of action for you.

What you are describing is VERY uncommon. I would request an infectious disease consultation ASAP, and a CT scan of your abdomen and pelvis (to make sure there is nothing anyone is missing).

M fortuitum, marinum and other similar micobacterial infections is rare. In 30+ years I have seen 3.

This usually requires the assistance of an infectious disease specialist to treat with prolonged antibiotics.

The source in two of those I treated were a tattoo and hot tub. The third is unknown.

It is unlikely to be a surgical failure.

It will get better with proper treatment.

Complications. Do happen after surgery and no surgery is free of complications. Your surgeon should’ve been managing complications related to the surgical procedure.
Surgical infections should be managed as soon as they are identified.
Contaminated, suture material will inevitably prevent proper healing until the suture material has been removed.
There is no single, correct statement or answer to your post. I suggest you continue following up with your plastic surgeon who is ultimately responsible for your overall well-being and the outcome of the procedure.
