My husband had traditional (i.e. Not laser) liposuction on his abdomen, flanks and back 3 weeks ago. His job requires him to lift very heavy objects (up to 300 lbs) with a partner about 4-5 times per day. The rest of his duties are fairly light. How long should he refrain from this very heavy lifting? What are the risks of lifting heavy too soon?

Answer: Activity Restrictions After Liposuction Thank you very much for your question.Every doctor has their own protocols regarding postoperative activity restrictions. I don't want to say anything that would contradict your doctor's wishes. I would call your doctor's office and ask, as they know you and your surgery best, and can provide you the most individualized recommendations. Best of luck!

Answer: When is it OK to engage in heavy lifting I generally tell my patients to avoid engaging in activity that causes pain after liposuction. Most patients can engage in unrestricted high-impact activities 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure.I think it's unlikely any damage would be done or long-term results would be compromised from engaging in heavy lifting sooner than that but I would defer to his plastic surgeon to see what he or she recommends.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
