I have lumpy vein 8 weeks after sclerotherapy treatment! Is this normal?

I had sclerotherapy for spider veins 8 weeks ago and injected a vein that I had since birth. It has almost disappeared but it is still lumpy and hurts when I touch it. Will it go away by itself? Do I have to see my doctor again?

The "lumpiness" you are experiencing is due to the "trapped blood" that often occurs after sclerotherapy as well as some inflammation of the vein wall itself, although , by this time, this component is of little significance. Usually, the larger the vein, the greater the chance for this phenomenon to occur. The first visit after a sclerotherapy treatment is typically when this is recognized, and aspiration or removal is recommended. Even after 8 weeks, it is possible to aspirate whatever liquid component remains, leaving the organized (solid) component to be absorbed by the body. Compression stockings can help relieve any discomfort in the leg during the healing process, and should be worn daily until it has resolved.

Following sclerotherapy some veins may clot and form hard areas due to trapped blood within the vein.  Many times these areas will resolve on their own.  Heat to the area and ibuprofen will also help. The alternative treatment for these is to evacuate them with a small needle under local anesthesia.  At 8 weeks I would recommend evacuation and follow up with your treating physician.

It is important to see the doctor who did the sclerotherapy as a general rule. This is most likely a retained coagulum and sometimes the inflammation that goes along with it is called post sclerotherapy thrombophlebitis.
