I am getting my surgery overseas next Wednesday and my surgeon has not given me any pre op information yet, as I have not yet seen him, so I have been vaping regularly. I did not know about the smoking rule until now, if I stop 9 days before (now) will that be enough time? Even 11? I am on a time constraint and will do anything to get the nicotine out of my system in time. Please help!

Answer: My rhinoplasty is in 9 days. If I stop vaping now, will that be enough time? Would 11 days be enough? Smoking and vaping reduce circulation to the skin and impede healing. It is best to avoid smoking and vaping, second hand smoke and cigarette replacements, such as nicotine patches or gum, in the perioperative period. While you should ideally stop smoking for 2 weeks before and after your surgical procedure, YOU MUST NOT SMOKE FOR A MINIMUM OF 24 HOURS BEFORE AND 24 HOURS AFTER SURGERY. Not doing so can put you at risk of poor healing, infection, and other dangerous complications, if you will resume smoking or vaping during recovery or before your incision sites, have healed.

Answer: Smoking and vaping before surgery There are multiple risks involving smoking/vaping and surgery. Not only nicotine well known negative effects on wound healing/micro-circulation but also postoperative coughing (after anesthesia), can create multiple immediate and late negative effects/complications. We always advice our patients to stop smoking at least 4-6 weeks before surgery (in same cases, depending of type of surgery, even longer). Combination of vaping and surgery being done overseas should be carefully considered from stand point of safety. Good luck.

Answer: Rhinoplasty Thank you for your question. Nicotine should be stopped three weeks prior to any surgery. I would advise you to discuss this with your surgeon.
