Swollen upper lip one month after Volbella? (Photo)

Question

I received volbella injection in upper lip and a little under eyes exactly one month ago. This morning I woke up with bad swelling that got worse as the day went on in my upper and a little swollen under eyes. I contacted my injector and his response was "I have never seen any type of delayed reaction to hyaluronic lip fillers" I went to the emergency room and they told me I may have angioedema but they are not sure why or what caused it. They did not give me anything to treat.

Thanks for posting your photos and concerns. I have seen some delayed swelling from the Vycross technology fillers. You should see your injector and consider taking steroids or other anti-inflammatory. If this does not work, then consider dissolving the filler and try something different next time.Best wishes, Dr. ALDO :)

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph and I am sorry to hear of your upper lip swelling.  Angioedema due to the filler a month after treatment would be very unusual and I would try and review other possibilities for this reaction.  Certainly treatment can be started with oral steroid use but the key will be to identify the offending agent that caused this.

Delayed swelling is something that does occasionally occur and the fact that your injector doesn't know this is worrisome. I would suggest that you get a second opinion from a really experienced injector such as a board certified plastic surgeon (you can find on on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website). You may need to have the filler dissolved.

It is possible to have a delayed response, such as your picture depicts, weeks and even months after the injection of hyaluronic acid based fillers, like Volbella.  If your injector does not know how to deal with this, I would recommend seeking another opinion as quickly as possible.  The Volbella probably needs to be dissolved and you may need to be on antibiotics and/or oral steroids. Thank you for your question and your photo. Sorry to hear about your very very unusual experience.  It is highly highly unlikely that this happened after Volbella.  Angioedema can be caused by many factors and you should see an allergy specialist to determine what you were allergic too. is a hyaluronic acid filler designed to enhance the lips. Angioedema is normally a result of an allergic reaction. If there is an allergy to a component of the product the reaction would be seen in the first few days. There may be a different cause. Angioedema is typically treated with steroids and antihistamines.

Could the lip swelling be from something else? A new product you are applying to your lips? I have never seen delayed swelling with volbella. I would consider oral anti-histamines and an oral steroid taper. Suspend all use of topical and spray personal care products for a few weeks, including nail polish.

This type of delayed reaction would be very unusual for any filler.  I would consider oral antihistamines or oral steroids to help with this reaction and to see if there was any other reason that you could have gotten this type of reaction, other than the fillers.  Please consult an expert in lip injections for the best cosmetic results.  Best, Dr. Green
