Can the pocket be made smaller?

Question

I had a breast augmentation done and I was told that its possible the pocket for the implant was made too big causing it to fall out of place. Can this happen? Can it be corrected?

At times, even the best plastic surgeon in the world will open an implant pocket too far to the side or too far down leading to the necessity of correcting this overly opened pocket.  Partial closure of breast implant pockets can be done by any number of techniques.  When the surgeon uses the scar tissue, i.e. the capsule, as a hammock to close the overly opened portion of the pocket, this is often referred to as a capsulopexy, whether it be inferior or lateral.A capsulorraphy is sewing together two pieces of the capsule.  This technique is often reinforced by another piece of tissue, either an acellular dermal matrix or, my personal favorite, Seri scaffolding.  I am sure these various techniques are well known to your personal plastic surgeon.  At this point, I would recommend you contact him or her to discuss which technique would be best to decrease the parameters of your breast implant pocket.

It is possible but it can be difficult. The breast pocket relies on scar tissue to maintain its shape. Scar tissue can heal too loose, too tight, or just right. Attempting to retighten loose scar tissue is not always successful. You should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options.

Thank you for sharing. Oversized breast pockets can occur. Fortunately there are options. It can be stitched closed after the capsule is properly treated or a sling of dermal matrix skin can be used to close off the volume. The treatment depends on the patient's breast exam and needs. A fairly common complication of breast augmentation surgery is implant malposition, either too high or too low, or even too big laterally or medially.  A pocket that is too big can be the reason for an implant riding too low. These conditions are fixable, ask your surgeon about it or seek a second opinion from a board certified plastic surgeon. Yes this can happen.  It can be corrected with a capsulorrhaphy which involves closing a portion of the breast pocket to correct displacement of the implant.

Thank you for your question.  It is possible to make the pocket for an implant too large, which can cause the implant to be displaced, normally in a down or out direction.  Repair is possible and termed a capsulorrhaphy.  See a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in breast implant revisions to get the best results

If the pocket for a breast implant is made too large, the implant can slide iut of position.  A surgery called a capsulloraphy can be done to close the pocket down and secure the implant in the right location.
