Is 5 months too long to wear chin compression garment?

Question

I was advised in my 2nd month after Laser Lipo procedure for my chin area, to continue wearing my chin compression garment as long as I can. I have been wearing my compression garment during night for 5 months and was planning to wear until my expected final stage 6 months. Is this advisable?

Wearing a chin compression garment for 5 months after liposuction under the chin does seem like a very long time.  However, I would recommend following whatever instructions your surgeon gave you after the procedure since he or she has the most information about you and your procedure.

Compression garment wear beyond 6 weeks is typically unnecessary.  The result was the result at 3 months.

It is not usual to have to wear the compression garment for so long. After 6-8 weeks the garment doesn't offer much help anymore so it isn't really needed. Though your surgeon might have a reason unknown to me.

It is unusual to require at the use of a compression garment 5 months after lipo of the chin.  It is always advisable to follow the recommendations of your surgeon, but it is ok to ask what this is supposed to be accomplishing since it is not a common recommendation.I typically recommend 24/7 compression for less than a week, followed by night time compression for a few more weeks if well tolerated.  I sometimes recommend massage for several months after surgery in the rare case that a patient has prolonged lumpiness.  This usually resolves with massage and tincture of time.

garment is very important to wear to help control any swelling that may occur.
My suggestion is to follow up with your surgeon to make sure you are healing
properly and find out the right amount of time to keep the garment on.

I tell my patients to continue wearing the compression garments if they like wearing them or if they think it's helping them. If that's the case, they can wear them for as long as they like.Otherwise, two weeks is what we typically recommend, the first 24 to 48 hours continuously and then on and off after that.I see no harm in wearing the strap this long, though I doubt it's adding any benefit.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
