Can a kenalog injection ruin rhinoplasty results? 3 weeks post-op.

Thank you for your question. Photos would be very helpful to evaluate this. I would say that since you are only three weeks after the procedure, you should let some time pass. You should definitely follow up with you plastic surgeon. Sometimes a filler injection can help with the slight contour depression if it persists.

Many rhinoplasty surgeons use steroid injections to help lowering inflammation after nasal surgery and with that decrease swelling and potentially the amount of scar tissue production.Because of the increased tip swelling, these treatments tend to be more frequently performed after open rhinoplasty than following an endonasal surgery. In expert hands, this treatment should be safe and effective. If injections are performed in an inadequate way, skin changes or even skin loss can result. 

 Steroid injections to the nose can be very useful to help improve swelling and scar issue. However, one must use a low-dose and be very judicious in its use. I would discuss your concerns with your surgeon who can examine the area. It could be that the swelling in the area of the injection has just gone down much more quickly than the surrounding tissue and that things will even out with time.

Thank you for your question.It would be super helpful to have before and after pictures, and before and after Kenalog injection pictures.Kenalog is an anti-inflammatory steroid so perhaps the look you liked before was due to some swelling and kenalog took care of some of it.Kenalog can also give you dermal and fat atrophy as a complication.  That sometimes get better over many months, but can sometimes be permanent.Adding some filler to the area is a great option "to buy time" until a much later evaluation 6-12 months later.  Make sure the injector is experienced as risk of tip necrosis is real when doing fillers after a rhinoplasty surgery.Hope this helps a little bit!Kind regards,Dr. marc DuPere

Yes unfortunately one of the side effects of steroid injection is depression or contour defects due to soft tissue atrophy. I would allow 3-6 months and you may then consider some filler in the area to smooth out the contour.

Steroid injections used to decrease swelling can cause a depression in the skin and soft tissue.  Give it a few weeks (6) or more to see if it settles down.  Stay in touch with your surgeon.

Generally speaking, one of the downsides of Kenalog injection is tissue atrophy and therefore collapse. If necessary, injection of dermal fillers can sometimes improve the problem. The missing information is what concentration and what volume of Kenalog was used.  We need to know this to give a meaningful opinion. Stay close to your surgeon and express your dissatisfaction.  There are always remedies

In general,I am not a big fan of kenalog injections for swelling. Swelling will go away on its own. You will have to see how things change over time( at least 6 months) after the injection.  Best of luck.
