Drain removal, how long does it take to heal? (photos)

This is a situation that should be directed to your plastic surgeon. They would be in the best position to determine whether this is normal healing or if intervention, like antibiotics, is needed.

I'm not sure why you had a drain after liposuction. However your complaints are worrisome and you should report these to your surgeon.

If you have greenish drainage, reddish discoloration and it is tender to touch, then I would definitely return to your surgeon who can assess if the drainage site is infected and if antibiotics are needed.  I would also encourage you to allow the area to get wet during the shower as this helps to clean the incision site as well.

Usually the drain site closes down a few days after treatment.  If it has not and is smelling and draining, you might want to see your surgeon to make sure everything is ok.

Thank you for your question. These small drain sites should close and heal within a few days of the drain being removed. You should get check by your surgeon to make sure that you don't have an infection. Green fluid is concerning. Good luck.

Thanks for your question.Haven't ever heard of someone placing a drain for standard liposuction without any type of skin removal.... it doesn't really mean too much regarding your question but it's just a bit odd.Anyway, for my patients that do have drains, I normally tell them that the drain site can leak for normally 1-3 days before it seals up, and it's not impossible for them to leak up to a week. As for the appearance, yes, they can look quite unusual or angry as they are healing up. Just based on the pictures you provided, I wouldn't say that it looks too out of the ordinary for a drain that was removed 5 days ago and is still having some leakage. Also, it's not unusual for the site to still be sore at this point.Best bet is for you to contact your surgeon if you have concerns though.Hope this helps.

I am intrigued that your drains were left in for 15 days.  It is generally recommended that drains should come out once you reach a minimum drainage amount that should have been outlined and reviewed in your post-op care instructions. My patients usually reach that minimum drainage amount around 7 days post op, give or take a few days.  I  find leaving drains in over 2 weeks can lead to excess scar tissue encasing the drain itself, making it difficult to easily remove; it can also pose an increased risk of infection at the entry site.I do feel your wound does seem infected, especially if you are seeing green discharge.  I caution you to see your surgeon ASAP!
