I'm a healthy 34-year-old, 5'3" and 140lb doctor who is "skinny fat" - very pudgy but not large. I am willing to pay out of pocket for the gastric balloon. I have tried every diet on the planet and know what NOT to eat (I have a MSc in Nutrition), but have a very hard time eating healthily. My weight has skyrocketed 4-5 times, usually after a stressful event. When I eat normally, I weigh 115lbs. I have tried everything(been in therapy for years) and am so discouraged and desperate. Please help

Answer: Gastric balloon for BMI less than 30 The intragastric balloons are only FDA approved for individuals with a BMI between 30 and 40. However, there are certainly patients who would benefit from this type of procedure but fall outside of the FDA indicated range. This is considered "off-label" use but is not a contraindication. Based on your history, an intragastric balloon would likely help you achieve your goals, though it would be important to review the risks, expectations, and potential complications of these procedures, particularly if it is used off-label. Obalon, the swallowed balloon system, would be worth considering if you have a bit less weight to lose, as it tends to have fewer early side effects after placement. Hope that helps!

Answer: Balloon for lower BMI The FDA "recommendation" is BMI 30-40 for the gastric balloon. This procedure can still be done for lower BMI but it will be consider "off label" use... Im sure you could find a surgeon to place a balloon on you... Having said that, it will be a very high price to pay to lose 15-20 lbs. The balloon is going to cost you at least 7-8K dollars.
