I recently had my surgery on 11-13-19 and so far so good. Since beginning my journey back in February I have been nothing but pleased with the doctor, staff, and hospital stay. They are truly wonderful! So caring and friendly and always checking up to make sure I’m doing well and staying on track. I highly recommend NYBG anyone wanting to make this type of change in their life.
I had a wonderful experience with this practice. Dr Garber is an excellent surgeon and made sure I was well informed before and after surgery. He is very caring and has a great bedside manner. I would highly recommend Dr Garber and NYBG. Thank you for helping me reaching my goals that I never thought were possible.
I did a lot of research about finding the top bariatric surgeon and chose Dr. Shawn Garber who is the most experienced in the New York area. I also chose him because he was the only one doing the single incision sleeve gastrectomy with no scars. My surgery went amazing and changed my life. I have more energy than ever and can run after my children. I am so glad I had the surgery and chose Dr. Garber as my surgeon. Updated on 29 May 2015: Dr. Garber was the best and changed my life. I had sleeve gastrectomy and already lost almost 100 pounds and feel like a new person. I love being able to run after my children. Dr. Garber is always accessible via email and has great confident bedside manner. The sleeve gastrectomy was the best choice for me. I am never hungry and feel full after small amounts. I have more energy than ever.
I had my sleeve done on December 17th. The doctor asked me to do the pre-surgery diet before the procedure which resulted in a 15 lb weight loss even before the surgery. As of today. I am down 50 lbs and I feel great. My only complication from the surgery was a secondary infection I developed two weeks after. This resulted in a two day hospital stay. What I can say is that you need to be serious about losing weight and LISTEN to your doctor. It was well worth the time and pain to live a much healthier life. Updated on 19 Apr 2015: 5 months post op and I am chugging along. So far I am down 65 pounds but the weight loss has slowed down to about 5 lbs per month. Still another 45 lbs to go. My biggest issue is finding time to exercise.
I kept gaining weight the more I tried to lose it. Carrying around an extra person in poundage took a huge toll on my psyche, my confidence, my back and knees. I was desperate and fearful that I wouldn't even make it to retirement at the rate I was going so I cashed in my retirement investment and had RNY in March 2009. I will not lie and say that it didn't hurt. It did. The recovery was painful for me and learning to eat again was brutal in my case. I'm still learning over a year later. It's important to remember to pay attention to what you are eating and how you are eating it. After 50 something years of gobbling food, it requires concentration to change that. Gastric bypass surgery is not a cure for obesity but it was the best tool out there and for me, the only way I could reclaim my life. I have indeed reclaimed my life and the added bonus is that I can buy cute clothes and fit in any chair! I've lost 157 pounds and have gone from size 32 to size 12. I'm 5'9. Sure, I need plastic surgery... but I cannot afford it in this questionable economy since I can't find a job. Botox helped a bit. Updated on 12 Feb 2011:
There are many options for revision of gastric bypass including endoscopic revision using the overstitch device, placing a Lap-Band over the bypass, or completely revising the gastric bypass laparoscopically. The first step is to have an endoscopy performed by your bariatric surgeon to see what you may qualify for. You can not have a sleeve gastrectomy after a gastric bypass.
If you are have a symptomatic with a slip it is very important to have the band fixed or completely removed, A slip can lead to severe erosive esophagitis that can lead to Barrett's esophagus ( a precancerous condition) and also can lead to necrosis and perforation of the stomach if it becomes really bad. A removal of a slipped Lap-Band should be covered by all insurances in an emergent situation like this. I would complain to your state insurance department and seek the advice of a qualified bariatric surgeon right away.
The Band can slip at anytime after surgery. It can be anytime from 1 day after surgery or even 20 years after surgery. The symptoms of a slip are usually severe gastroesophageal reflux, difficulty tolerating solid foods, and vomiting. I recommend you have an endoscopy by an experienced bariatric surgeon because they can best assess if there is a slippage and then address how best to treat it. I wish you the best of luck.
Generally, bariatric surgeries like the Lap Band, gastric sleeve, and gastric bypass, are offered to patients who have a BMI over 40, with no related health conditions. In addition, patients who have a BMI over 35 combined with at least one comorbidity (including sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or osteoarthritis), are also good candidates for weight loss surgery.
If you are having issues keeping food down you should seek the advice of your bariatric surgeon or a second opinion from another bariatric surgeon as soon as possible. There is no way to reverse a sleeve gastrectomy because the large portion of the stomach was removed. If you have a stricture or a twist it can sometimes be fixed with endoscopy and a stent or sometimes requires conversion to a sleeve gastrectomy. It is important for you to seek the advice of a qualified bariatric surgeon to get to find out why you are having problems right away.
