I’m of mixed Asian heritage and I was wondering if I should go to someone who specializes in Asian nose surgery or if a mainline plastic surgeon would be fine. I’ve read there are certain anatomical differences that make Asian nose surgery more difficult then regular surgery. I’m looking to have my nose slimmed and brought up slightly. I have a slight septum deviation but it’s almost entirely cosmetics.
Answer: Specialist vs Mainstream Dear Starheart,Thank you for your question. The most important element in your search is to find a surgeon who specializes in nose surgery - not just an individual who is board certified. Nearly 1/3 of my practice comprised of revising other surgeons work in the nose. With regard to your Asian ancestry, your nose does not pose greater challenges been any other nose, but just specific challenges that inherent to your own. The nose, as a whole, has the highest revision rate of any aesthetic procedure on the body. Once again, I feel that the most important element in your choice is finding a well rounded and experienced nasal specialist who can treat cosmetic and functional issues. The factors responsible for your future success are directly related to your surgeon’s training, board certification, surgical specialization, and observed outcomes. Further, plastic surgeons, of which there are whole body, facial and ocular, are not referred to as cosmetic surgeons due to extensive differences in training as well as certification by nationally recognized American Boards (ABMS). Finally, it is important to do your online research for medical or legal actions taken against the physician by state licensing and medical boards. Hopefully this is helpful to you. Be healthy and be well, James M. Ridgway, MD, FACS

Answer: Rhinoplasty specialist Hi, Thank you for your post. I would recommend setting up a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in Asian rhinoplasty. The best way to build up your tip would be using an autologous graft, which is tissue and cartilage that comes from your own body. This graft will provide the safest results since it comes from your own body and there is less of a chance that it will reject. The amount of slimming also depends on the thickness of your skin. When you meet with the plastic surgeon they will be able to go over all of your questions with you. I would also recommend asking for before and after photos.

Answer: Consult with a specialist An Asian rhinoplasty specialist will be able to comprehensively address the issues you have with your nose. One thing to keep in mind though is that there is a limitation to the amount of tip refinement you can achieve (how small/narrow) because of the thickness of your skin. While there are a variety of approaches and techniques employed by various surgeons, it is up to you to do your due diligence to find a rhinoplasty specialist experienced in Asian rhinoplasty in order to achieve the best results possible. Using autologous grafts (tissue and cartilage from your own body) will provide the safest and most permanent results.Consult with 2-3 of these surgeons in person and determine your comfort level with their approach, demeanor, and before and after results. Good luck.

Answer: Should I look for a nose specialist? It's important to look for a rhinoplasty specialist, Since nasal surgery is one of the most difficult procedures performed correctly in the entire field of cosmetic surgery. Study your prospective surgeon's before and after rhinoplasty photo gallery which should be extensive and reflective of their work. Board certifications, ratings, reviews, and testimonials are also important. It's also important to have realistic expectations upon what you're trying to accomplish. Digital computer imaging may be helpful in the communication process.
