Hello "...Caring..." from NYC, I have copied your inquiry and will answer your questions one-by-one. While I have performed ~ 20 hymenoplasties ("HP"), both myself, and many experienced HP surgeons do not advertise this service, for reasons of personal security; I think you may understand. I consider it unfortunate that many women find themselves "...between a rock & a hard place" in regards to the religious dictum of "virginhood" prior to marriage consummation. That said, here are my answers to your questions: 1. "How long does hymenoplasty last?" (answer:) Hymenoplasty (HP), if performed properly and if the patient is very diligent in regards to the do's and dont's of recovery, should last until something (e.g. a penis!) is inserted through the repaired hymenal opening. 2. "Is it permanent until I have sexual intercourse?" (answer:) Yes; after healing (which takes ~ 4-6 weeks) the repaired hymen will not "open" or "rip" or stretch with normal, everyday activities. 3. "What activities should I avoid after undergoing the procedure?" (answer:) While the answer to this question is to a large extent technique-specific, and is best answered by your personal surgeon, the avtivities to avoid for the first 3 weeks are brisk walking, squatting, excessive stair-climbing, swimming, tampon insertin, etc. From 3-6 weeks avoid anything that involves insertion through the vaginal opening, as well as swimming and heavy exercising, 4. "Are there different techniques/methods for hymenoplasty?" (answer:) Yes, there certainly are. Dr. Red Alinsod and his trainees' techniques are different from mine (and my trainees) and Dr. Marco Pelosi's (and his trainees.) Personally, my repairs involve 1-3 very mini- perineoplasties at the hymenal ring, for a "purse-string" tightening of the hymenal opening... 5." If a provider is performing hymenoplasty at a lower price compared to other providers, does this mean that the quality of the procedure is poor?" (answer:) Not necessarily. Some doctors are price-gougers, but most are not. We all price according to a loose combination of what we think the service is worth, what the going prices are in our area, what we think is fair for our expenses, time, and experience, etc. Look carefully at your prospective surgeon's website (although, again, because of security reasons, many surgeons (myself included) do ot hype or post our HP photos/experience. You are in NYC? The best persons in your area in my opinion would be Dr. Marco Pelosi III in Bayonne, NJ, Dr. Kevin Jovanovich in NYC, Dr. John Hunter in NYC, and Dr, Rob Jason in NTC. They are all sterling practitioners; I believe that Dr. Pelosi does HP surgery, but I am not certain about the others. Or... you can always come out to California & see me (I've operated o several women from the NYC area), but it is a long way, and you have good people closer to home... Very best wishes, it you feel you "...have to have it done... Michael P Goodman, MD, FACOG, IF, AAACS Sacramento, CA, USA
