My chin sticks out a bit from the side when my face is resting and definitely when I smile. Does it protrude from my face too much to the point where I would need it shaved down? Or are there any other alternatives that you think would suit me?
Answer: Genioplasty would Help Dear Vivid, Thank you for your pictures. It appears that your chin is a bit prominent. I'm a little suspicious that your lower jaw is factors into this as well. If you just want to focus on the chin, then a slight reduction with a sliding genioplasty would help. They're also needs to be consideration of what the skin of the neck will look like with that type of movement. Sometimes it can become a bit fuller, and there needs to be consideration of possibly managing the area as well. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes, Earl Stephenson, Jr, MD, DDS, MBA. Answer: Soft tissue genioplasty If you are concerned about your chin projection when you smile it suggests a dynamic problem with muscle and soft tissue rising on contraction. A soft tissue genioplasty to reduce the soft tissue may be sufficient, as it will tighten up the tissue and reduce its change in shape. However, the big concern is that on the photo not smiling, your nose lip chin relationship appears very acceptable. To then reduce the chin for only the occasion when you smile, which is not the majority of the day, will leave you with a reduced size chin at rest. An alternative is to try some botox or fillers.

Answer: Chin assessment To make an assessment, we really need to see your whole face. Each anatomic area looks the way it does in relationship to surrounding areas. If your chin projection bothers you enough that you’re willing to have surgery then you can consider a chin reduction. It’s not as simple procedure. It’s important you select providers who have sufficient skill and experience with this operation. It seems that oral surgeons have an edge over plastic surgeons for this kind of work. I’m guessing that your mandible is actually slightly recessed with a slightly projecting mentalis. I’m guessing that you have an overbite dental occlusion? On your profile picture of your upper lip has more forward projection than your lower lip. The combination of small mandible with a projecting chinis not ideal but is also a fairly complex thing to correct. Whether surgery is something you should do is best decided with an in person consultation. You may want to consider talking to both plastic surgeons and oral surgeons in your community. There are a lot of variables to take in the consideration. I don’t think there’s a yes, and where no answer to your question. I don’t think surgery is unreasonable. Most people will have the appearance of a more projecting chin when smiling. It’s not so much that the chin moves forward, but instead the soft tissues are pulled back by contraction of the zygomaticus muscle. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
