I am self conscious of my jaw and recessed chin. At certain angles it doesn’t look terrible, but when I am not posed and am going about my day it looks really recessed and I have a double chin. This bothers me. I have had braces and as far as I know my bite is aligned. Would a genioplasty be a good option to enhance my lower face and make it look more harmonious? If not, do you have other recommendations for improving my lower face?

Answer: Chin augmentation assessment Thank you for including good pictures. Based on those, your chin has good vertical height, but it’s still lacking in forward projection. This makes you fairly ideal candidate for augmentation either with a sliding genioplasty or implant. Both procedures offer advantages and disadvantages. One of the operations is not better than the other. From my experience, it seems like plastic surgeons tend to prefer implants while oral surgeons tend to lean towards the sliding genioplasty, but there is no absolute and doctors from both specialties can address this problem and may offer both treatment options. Consider having a few in person consultations with both oral surgeons and plastic surgeons in your community. in regards to candidacy I would say you are fairly ideal. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
