This is down to technique. I prefer to use a micro cannula to inject the lips to prevent bruising. Lip augmentations with fillers (volbella, restylane, juvederm) is a great option to improve the fullness and suppleness of the lips.

Great question. There’s tons of vessels in the face, but the named vessels are the largest. Knowing the human face anatomy like the back of your hand is the most important point in avoiding blood vessels. Safe and gentle techniques for injection have been developed to reduce the risks and should be practiced. It’s not hard, however, to run into smaller vessels without names and have bruising.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  There are arteries in both the upper and lower lip and it is important to be aware of their anatomic distribution in order to avoid inadvertent injection.  It is also important for your injector to pull back on the syringe to ensure that they are not in a vessel prior to injection.  Ultimate careful technique will avoid injury to the artery and is one of the paramount reasons to see a professional for treatment.

Even in experienced hands, there is always a risk of bruising, swelling, redness and infection. The type of product used will also affect the risk of complications and recovery.

First, there are proper techniques that are followed to avoid any arterial injuries during lip filler injections. Even in the best of hands, there is always the possibility for bruising, swelling, and injury to a vessel -- but the risk is minimized by being treated by an expert.
Second, make sure that your face is injected by a board-certified, fellowship-trained MD with special expertise in facial cosmetic surgery. I would not trust a nurse, non-doctor, or aid to inject my face or anyone I love. Also I would advise avoiding "deals", specials, and discounts, and instead pick a doctor with extensive expertise in facial cosmetic injections.

One can not completely avoid injections or injury to the arteries in an around the face. Knowing the anatomy and where the large vessels are is important. But if you look at a roadmap of the face, there are small vessels everywhere. Injecting product should be done very carefully and slowly to minimize the risk.

A good injector should be aware of avoiding the arteries in your lips. The videos could be confusing because depending on the look the patient wants, and what areas of their lips they want plumped fillers will be placed in different areas. Additionally smaller vessels in the lips aren't in the same position with every person. An experienced injector can go over the structure of your lips and help you feel at ease with receiving the injection.
