Hard lump in under chin 9 weeks post Kybella. Is this normal? (photo)

Question

I am a thin and healthy 36 yr old. I only had a very small amount of fat, so doctor recommended i do 3 vials and only 1 treatment. I am now 9 weeks after Kybella and there is a hard lump in my under chin area. It appears more swollen in the mornings and is a little sensitive when i press it. When I yawn for example, I can feel it. I also see it protrude when i lift my head all the way up. I am not back to baseline because of this. Is this normal and how long more will this lump take to resolve?

Kybella swelling typically occurs immediately after the treatment, however, some patients will experience some tender lumps or bumps, the lumps that you are noticing are the destroyed fat cells that have clustered together. After 4- 6 weeks, your body will eliminate and continue to melt away the lumps of fat. It is important to be patient with the area and contact your provider if you have any questions or concerns.

This isn't typical after 9 weeks. I recommend following up with your Doctor. Keep in mind, Kybella usually requires a series of treatments. For best results with Kybella, I recommend a combination approach with thermage, ultherapy, exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF is an alternative for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. By now most lumps should be gone or nearly gone. Some can persist beyond 2 months but again, should be better. Without actually seeing or doing an exam it is difficult to know why it is persisting. Easy massage can help. You should return to the provider who did the procedure and see what they say. IF it stays the same or if it gets worse you should see your provider right away.

While many patients experience a hard lump at the injection site following a Kybella treatment, the fact that you still have this lump 9 weeks after an injection is not normal.  I would recommend following up with your doctor to talk about the ongoing side effects you are experiencing.

It is not uncommon to have a hard lump after kybelal for a few weeks and even upto a month. 9 weeks out, I would recommend that you go back to the doctor and be examined. Hello siz2018,It would not be common to still have a hard lump under the chin 9 weeks after Kybella.  It is normal to have several lumps for a few weeks after treatment that then begin to improve.  Treatment with kybella is based on the size of the area being treated.  Having 3 vials at 1 treatment usually indicates there was quite a bit of fat present (small amounts of fat are treated with 1-2 vials).  If you needed 3 vials it would be unlikely that it would be a one and done type of treatment.  I'd recommend you follow up with your injector to evaluate the area.I hope this helps and good luck.
