Kybella numbness is that normal? Got Kybella 1.5 weeks ago for double chin.

Question

There’s a part of it that is slightly still puffy and numb. I can run my finger over it and i can feel it but it’s still numb is that normal? How long till it goes away? I realized after the doctor is a board certified maxillofacial surgeon, should I also be concerned? For context he used 2 vials and injected me 3 times only.

Yes, some numbness and/or swelling can be typical and should gradually resolve over the next few weeks. Kybella take 1-3 treatments every 6 weeks.  Patient will develop swelling and possible bruising after each injection that may last a few days.  The benefit of Kybella is each treatment is quick and completed in the office. However, some patients need more than one treatment to get desired results.

It is very common for patients to experience numbness one and a half weeks following a Kybella injection.  As Kybella uses deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down fat, the results are not immediate.  While the Kybella breaks down fat cells, side effects like numbness could continue lasting up to 6 weeks.  If the numbness continues after 6 weeks, you may want to consider following up with your doctor.

In fact, numbness can be part of the normal post procedure process of receiving Kybella. In my experience, it typically doesn't last long (a few weeks at most and usually improves slowly over that time) but it is possible that it can be permanent.

Hello and thank you for bringing up this important issue. It is absolutely normal to have numbness after Kybella injections. I had Kybella myself and my numbness lasted about 6 weeks total although the area affected got smaller each week as the treatment area continued to shrink in size. It will resolve and rest assured that it is a very normal effect. All part of the inflammatory process. Good luck and enjoy your results as much as I do!

There is often some residual numb feeling to the area of treatment after injections with Kybella that can last several weeks. Some patients describe the feeling as a "woody" feeling. Most patients do not have real discomfort with this and it should be reassuring to know that this is common after a treatment and should go away by 3-4 weeks. Thanks for your question and posting pictures.  We have discontinued Kybella treatments in our practice for melting submental fat.  The FDA recently approved the SculpSure laser for treating submental fat (double chins).  It is a quick 25 minute, completely non-invasive treatment.  In the FDA study, the participants had 100% satisfaction after 1 or 2 treatments.  In the Kybella FDA studies, there is high satisfaction after an average of 6 treatments.  I did SculpSure recently and it was only mildly uncomfortable.  I had no noticeable swelling.  With Kybella, you will have noticeable swelling for 1-4 weeks.  The treatment cost for 1 SculpSure Submental is less than the average cost of 1 Kybella treatment.  Before you consider CoolScupt, try holding an ice pack under your chin for 4 minutes.  Now think about doing it for an hour.  Best of luck.

Thank you for your question. What you are experiencing is to be expected after this procedure. The numbing sensation is completely normal, as well as the swelling. This should continue to subside for you. Ice & Bromelain should help with inflammation. However, if the pain becomes untolerable, it would be best to contact your provider to follow up.
