Is it normal to break out with deep cyst-like acne 1-2 weeks after your SkinPen treatment? 38 y/o female - normal/oily skin

I had a treatment with an off-brand skinpen type device by my dermatologist. Very trustworthy office. 1-2 weeks after my treatment(and for weeks beyond that)I broke out with awful cyst-like acne- very deep & far beyond normal for my skin. I have another treatment scheduled 1 week but my face is just recovering from round 1 pimples. Are breakouts like that normal from microneedling treatments with SkinPen? (Was seeking treatment for skin tone, texture, lines, etc.) Should I go back for round 2?

Yes, acne breakouts can happen after a microneedling treatment. I recommend following up with your Doctor about after care and skin care recommendations. PDT therapy can improve inflammation. We suggest all patients follow up with facials like Silk Peel Dermalinfusuion to hydrate, exfoliate and provide the skin with antioxidants. Sun protection is also essential. I always combine microneedling with prp and lasers to get the best outcomes. We do treatments every 3-6 weeks. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question.  Texture and tone complaints is the number one issue of our patients.  You are not alone.  We offer several treatment options from chemical peels, microneedling, IPL and lasers.  After hearing all of the treatment options available, NONE of our patients in the last 3 years have elected microneedling.  The trauma from microneedling can actually cause more damage and pigmentation.  Hyperpigmentation is something we see and treat every day in our practice.  Depending on your skin type, you may be a candidate for a series of IPL treatments.  It should only be done on Skin Types I-III with no sun exposure.  Summer is probably not the best time to start IPL treatments.  We have been very successful using the PicoSure laser with the FOCUS and / or Flat Lenses with a series of treatments.  FOCUS lens treatments have the extra benefit of reducing fine lines and wrinkles.  Unlike the other treatments mentioned below, the PicoSure as almost no downtime.  This is one of our go to treatments for patients older than 40 and worried about the signs of aging.  This laser is safe for all skin types.  Start with sunscreen every day!  Once you have treated your hyperpigmentation to your satisfaction, you will probably need a follow treatment every 6 to 12 months depending your level of re-pigmentation.  Best of luck.
