I'm looking for doctors who perform sliding genioplasty surgery in the DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia areas. Also is it general better to see a Maxillofacial surgeon or plastic surgeon for this type of procedure?

Answer: Choosing the right type of provider Your question is an excellent one. It seems to me that the procedure is more commonly done by oral surgeons. In the end training of the provider and experience is what determines somebody’s competence. Some programs have more emphasis on when your facial surgery during the residency and some surgeons pick up the technique and practice it regularly, while others do not perform the procedure as commonly. It seems to me that plastic surgeons seem to rely on implants more frequently and cranial facial surgeons tend to prefer the sliding genioplasty. There are no absolutes, and there are good and bad in both specialties. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio of before, and after pictures and show you their entire collection of previous patients who had similar facial characteristics to your own. And experience provider should have no difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. It’s generally a good idea to have multiple consultations before juicing, cosmetic surgical procedures. The more consultations, you have the more likely you are to find the best provider. In the end, understanding your own candidacy for the procedure, and choosing the right provider are the two are single most important variables. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
