Hello, 33 years old with prior issues of being anemic. According to my calendar, I may be on my period during my upcoming lipo suction procedure. Should I have my paraguard IUD removed to avoid any issues and if impacts to my hemoglobin 2-3 months prior to surgery?
Answer: Should I have my paraguard IUD removed before lipo? 178 Thank you for your question regarding your upcoming liposuction with a history of anemia and an IUD. I suggest you consult with your medical doctor, gynecologist, and hematologist. Maximizing your hemoglobin level before your elective liposuction procedure will be essential. Once your hemoglobin is stabilized, then you can consider liposuction. Your gynecologist will be able to guide you to determine if removing the IUD will help or make your anemia worse. I performed many liposuction cases successfully on patients who have IUDs. Patients do not need to remove IUDs for elective liposuction. If your hemoglobin is stable, you can undergo liposuction. I hope this helps answer your question regarding undergoing liposuction while having an IUD and a history of anemia. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen. Answer: Copper IUD should be fine Hi Cute986403, I regularly talk with women about contraception prior to aesthetic surgery. Outside sources of hormones, like oral contraceptives or hormone IUDs, can increase risk for blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus) after surgery. To be fair, the risk for blood clots in the overall aesthetic surgery population is low-0.09%, or around 1:1000, and removing outside sources of hormones may decrease this already low risk by a fraction of a fraction of a percent. When women choose to remove their hormone contraception, I will often suggest a copper IUD (like the one you have) instead. The copper IUD can provide contraception without hormones around the time of surgery. I wouldn't recommend removing yours prior to surgery. Hope this helps.
