I am a critical kidney patient since I only have function of one kidney. I want to have a breast augmentation and lift, but I read that anesthesia can cause kidney failure. Is this true?
Answer: Surgery Many kidney patients have surgery, especially with shunts and transplants, and do well with anesthesia. You will need a medical clearance from your nephrologist and the amount of IV fluids given may need to be restricted depending upon your function. Anesthesia is way down the list on causing kidney failure.

Answer: Kidney disease, an elective cosmetic surgery If you have significantly compromised kidney function, then it may not be appropriate to have an elective cosmetic surgery. If you have significantly compromised kidney function, then it may not be appropriate to have a elective cosmetic surgery. Having only one functioning kidney isn’t a problem as long as it’s working well. If you’re overall kidney function is decreased then you should talk to your nephrologist about getting elective cosmetic surgery. All plastic surgeons will most likely insist on getting nephrology clearance so it’s never a yes or no answer. It simply depends on your kidney function. Including recent kidney function, blood tests would be helpful. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
