Can braces after a chin implant cause bone loss?

I almost always recommend a genioplasty over an implant. This procedure uses your own bone to create you desired outcome. Implants are limited to movements and tend to make the chin wider (typically bulky). With a genioplasty, we can essentially move your chin into any position, and without the potential of implant complications. A genioplasty has the added benefit of elongating your jawline as well. The entire procedure is done through the mouth, which means no external incisions or scarring. An implant however is placed through an incision under the chin, which will leave a small scar. As for braces, they will not effect the outcome of the genioplasty. They should not affect an implant either, but there is always the potential of your body rejecting the implant. If that happens, it has to be removed and you are back to where you started. This is one of the reasons I recommend a genioplasty. Chin implants tend to settle in the bone over time and create an impression on the surface. Some of this may be caused by micromovement of the implant which can be minimized with screw fixation. Orthodontics and braces will have no effect on the chin implant because the implant is placed on the inferior border of the mandible. Teeth movement occurs at the surface or alveolar bone.

In some cases, chin implants are attached to the bone using screws, which may reduce the risk of bone loss. However, getting braces after a chin implant could potentially cause movement and pressure on the jawbone, which might have an impact on the implant. This interaction could potentially lead to complications, but it would be best to discuss this with both your plastic surgeon and orthodontist to assess the individual risks and benefits in your situation.

No, braces simply move your teeth so they fit together better, and a chin implant simply augments a recessive mandibular bone. Both procedures are independent of each other
